If they say "other manufacturers" that is useless advise since there are more than one with more than one color scheme, polarity and wind direction.
The only trick I have for you is that you wire up a pickguard with crocodile clips and try it holding it above the strings of a guitar, over the neck, strumming over the body. That allows you to detect out of phase. Obviously you can figure out hum cancellation even outside the guitar.
