Multitrack Recorders

I was looking into the Korg D4 Digital Multitrack.

Any suggestions or points to consider? Something in this pricerange would be nice. I like the idea of an xlr input as well as phono. How much recording time can you realistically get onto a compact flash? They always state big number but I'm sure those are minutes with cut corners.

I'd personally save up for a used Boss BR-8 series multitrack. Really solid little units.

I love the new small digital recorders they're all coming out with. I'm not familiar with that one but my experiences with Korg as far as synths go have been outstanding. You can pretty much do with that unit what you needed to spend over $500 or more in a recording studio 20 years ago--and it probably sounds better anyway.

I love it. Cool effects, Really great amp modeling IMO. Looks like the one you like can do anything mine can do except mine is 8 tracks instead of four. Mine also has a built in drum machine. As far as the time, the card mine came with held about four or five tunes using all 8 tracks. I don't really use the V tracks, or alternate take tracks. Don't know why, but I don't. I got a 512 card and of course, it holds a LOT more. I have come nowhere near filling it up yet so I can't really give a time.

Here are links to two songs I did completely on the Boss. Drums, guitar amps, bass amps, effects, mix, everything. The drums are the internal drum machine. Pardon my vocals, lol. This is the kind of quality you can get--and probably better if you're a better engineer than I am--from these great little units. On a side note, if you want to get more tracks and that drum unit, the BR-864 would probably go for about $250-$300 American dollars used I believe. Maybe even less. If not, the Korg looks like a really cool machine.

That 8 track one looks good. But for some reason I have it stuck in my head to get a recorder with XLR, you lose sound quality from mics when using a jack.

Nice songs, really like them. Do you guys ever use the recorders on batteries and take it to locations where there's no outlet?

I'm waiting for y2stevo to get his two cents in as I know he has a D4.

Hey dude!

The Boss does have an XLR. Works great. I love taking my recorder out of the house just to mess around. It gets a few hours on batteries and I can either bring along a mic or use the onboard mic, which is surprisingly good. Thanks for the song compliments.

check out the new musician's friend catalog. there's some killer digital 4 track hand-held stuff going on with dual mics popping out the top and stuff. it's like a whole world of digital recording out there blossoming right before our eyeballz.

I'm checking out the Zoom MRS-8 SD. I have a gfx8 effects pedal from zoom which I'm happy and yet hot happy about. So I'm kind of shying away from them.

I was also looking at Fostex stuff but I would want a drum machine in my unit to do drum stuff.

I was wondering, would I be able to hook up a mixer to the D4 (or any unit) and get good recording out of it? Would the quality go down?

And is there a huge loss in quality over MPEG1 Layer 2 to wav.?
