Music Man amps reissued!

Chickenwings

Alnico 6/8
the great sounding workhorse has returned!
The only thing that's missing is the original mid 70s tube phase inverter "sixty-five" and "one thirty"series and are mostly considered the best sounding ones according to musicman nerds (like me).
Ive actually got my old musicman sitting here right now, cos i've lent my twin to its current owner. It always surprises me how damn good it sounds at any volume.
Looks also like the HD and RD amps that they have reissued have modern lightweight transformers and lightweight neo speakers, so they are not pure reissues of the old ones...however i'm pretty excited to try them out. Chances are, they sound even better and weigh less than the old ones.

G-oo-LY!

Why? They wrere all solid state rectified and had a real hi-fi( not in an old Sunn Hi-fi good way) somehwat , I don't wanna say "sterile", but not really very expansive, or 'rich' sound. "Sound even better?" Thats a bold assumption. How bout the build quality?
I am going to guess these will be cheap circuitboard amps on par with the Hot Rod Devilles. Old Musicmans are cheap enuf, get one of those and have it restored. I honestly don't get the appeal or feel your enthusiasm. To me, its like gonna be about when Fender reissued Sunn.

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

Good amps. Nothing sterile about them. I think the main reason people didn't like them was because they weren't fender/vox/marshall, without giving their good qualities a chance.

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

^I'm into Untuned -Core.

Johnny Winter played through an old S.S. rectified 4x10 M.M. amp. To top it off, he was using the old schreechy Firebirds with the Minihumbuckers. His music was great, but it was extremely HI-Fi, and perhaps in a Jazz way IDK .IMO Johnny Winters tone was a boxy sound, and had little to no richness. Like how Jerry Garcia ( and even Zappas' cleans) sort of liked his(their) tone, but Garcia used some cream of the Crop Guitars and Speakers. I'm not sure why, but I'm not about to question them, they were/are masters..

If they could build an old Musicman to old specs/tolerances, I *might get wood, but I sincerely doubt thats whats going to happen.

and this guy. Check out which amps are mic.ed and which ones are being used as expensive amp stands:

Mark Knopfler too is partial to musicman amps.

Its a shame the didn't have uncle Gerry to help them choose their gear.

Owned several of the PI 65's and if you think those are no tone and sterile you have no ear. One of the very best warm expressive clean amps ever produced!!

But none of those guys know that making a guitar sound good is all about brand names.

erm..you win( *trots away at a moderate to fast pace with tail between legs*)

Can they make a good reish, with good build quality?

To be real honest, I ain't hating, and I don't think Karpathian is either. Johnny winter loves a real bright and immediate sound. Probably cause his ears aren't really so good no more.
Its a bright fat punchy, but yes, it is somewhat ..again, not "sterile", but not really at all like a Fender, which is the end all be all of tone-'fat, thick, juicy, rich'.
Say what you will, and no matter who endorsed or played them, but at the end of the day, The Fenders( 4x10 Super Reverbs and Delux 'Verbs) are far and away the choicest amps, and the most rich and experessive amps . Musicman may come close, but hey, not really.

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

IIRC, I read a few months ago that the new MM amps are being made by Markbass of Italy.
If the build quality is the same as Markbass, these will stand up quite well.

OK, here it is: link to Ernie Ball forum

Honestly owned black faced Supers and Deluxes and thought the 65 watt Musicmans I owned with the PI tubes were the bigger richer sounding amps not the Fenders. The 210 I had had a bias circuit gremlin. It would sound great for a while then just go into runaway every so often without warning and light up the power tubes. We never could find a solution even running it for houers on the bench with a signal generator so after the 3rd time it smoked on stage I got it retubed set the bias then sold it. Bought the 2nd a 112 65 in a local Pawn shop for almost nothing and wound up selling it to a guy who made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Still miss that one and have been looking for another one that sounds that good. The 112 65 I had in particular with the 6CA7's would stomp the heck out of any good blackface Deluxe for big juicy cleans with a lot of headroom!!
Hope the new ones sound as good and if so might just wind up with one!

Aerosmith too!

The only thing that bothers me is that there's no low wattage model.

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

Music Man amps had SS preamp sections and tube outputs. The early ones had one 12AX7 as a phase inverter, later versions only had the power tubes. I had a 130 Head for a while, that was ungodly loud (I think it had four 6CA7's in it), my friend uses one for bass. The lower power amps were more popular, though.

I remember seeing the ads with Clapton playing through the big stack when the MM's first came out, I think he only used them for a short time (previously he had been using a Dual Showman I believe, like during the Delaney and Bonny period).

There's a 2x10 model right? School me, are these "American" or "British" amps?

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

i have a 210 sixty-five here from 1975. Its definitely in the fender camp, but the preamp essentially has a tube screamer type clipping circuit built in for some controllable drive. Also, by judicious use of the "bright" and "deep" switches you can get some pretty british tones. I tool mine a step further towards tge british midrange grind by removing the original alnico speakers (heresy!) and replaced them with high wattage greenback voiced speakers. I'd say that musicmans are versatile, but still have a voice of their own.

Re: Music Man amps reissued!

Cool. I'm looking for a second amp for my setup. I was considering a Fender bassman (410 tweed reissue)

Music man amps seemed like a good alternative. Are they really bright??
