Music Man Amps

PUCKBOY99

Hey, I was combing the local Craigslist & stumbled upon an ad for 2 Music Mans for sale:

210-65 & HD 210-150

Either of them worth trying out? I was thinking the 210-65 might be worth a shot, but not sure what would be a good offer.

Thanks,

T

What is your budget for a Fender?

Re: Music Man Amps

At the moment, nothing! :(

I might grab TGWIFs CVR, but I'm trying to play one first as he says they aren't a "traditional" Fender sound.

I just stumbled on the Craigslist ad & thought these 210-65s were supposed to be kind of like a Twin.....No ???

Re: Music Man Amps

Christian's Lux sounds great. It really isn't a completely traditional sounding Fender, but it is still cool. I toyed with buying that thing for months, but I ended up with a traditional Lux as you know. The speakers he had in it that I actually bought didn't really suit that amp IMO. We both agreed that they sounded best in my 75 Lux.

Overall I will definitely give a positive plug to that amp. I would love to have it as a second amp, but when I was looking at it I was looking for my "primary" amp and I knew I wanted that traditional Fender sound.

And to be quite honest C's amp would be more traditional if it had a wetter reverb. It has killer verb it's just not that super duper heavy splashy Fender verb.

Dang now I am wanting his amp after thinking about it this long.

Back off beyotch!!! :D

I'm gonna grab it...just need to get the dough together

Dude wanna fight??? LOL!! NAh bro I just payed Scott for my amp yesterday so my amp cheese fund is zilch right now. Plus for the first time in a looooong time I don't really has much GAS to speak of. I have all my bases covered!
In all seriousness that CVR is a killer amp!!

Re: Music Man Amps

It sounds like a good one.....the local GC is supposed to get a CVR & a DRRI in today....those are the 2 I wanna try the most.

I guess we could've just PM'd all this

I think it's mainly a curiousity with the MM amps.

Re: Music Man Amps

I like MM amps actually. I used to play a 65 head all the time at the shop I worked at in the 90's. Great cleans, very loud. I actually own the 4x12 that it was paired with.

Re: Music Man Amps

Terry, A lot of MM amps have S.S. Preamps. They sound kinda like a Fender,But not really.:eek13: There not bad amps, But I'd rather have a ALL TUBE Fender.

Re: Music Man Amps

I had the MusicMan HD130 with the separate 4x12 cab. As others have said on H-C, it is a great sounding amp. Solid state preamp with tube power stage (which is much better than a tube pre and solid power). Best clean sound... thick distortion and worked great with a tube preamp -I used my Kittyhawk Quatro. I had to sell it as it was just too heavy and 40 watts is overkill for me these days. That amp was loud -and very well constructed. If I could of kept it for studio work, I would have as it had a sound that recorded very nicely. The cab was also great... but also too heavy for me. I wouldn't mind a 4x10 cab out of neodymiums and 1/2" ply !

Re: Music Man Amps

They sound great and GORGEOUS when clean. Very good for FUNK.

They are a tad tight. Yes, they are solid state in the preamp, with maybe one tube, but who cares? Silver Jubilees have diodes in the circuit, and that Slash kid, I dunno, he might have a career ahead of him.

While I am a bit of a Fender snob I will leave you with this...

if this helps, some blues hack named Johnny Winter (or something) STILL USES the HD130. He cranks it, puts up all th emids and treble and takes off the bass (read the last GP magazine). I mean, he's really skinny and pale, he's kind of a wannabe, but he's really old so he must be onto something right???

Re: Music Man Amps

One of the best amps I owned was a Musicman RD-210. A 100 watt Tube/Solid State Hybrd. It was small but a heavy bastard and would shake the walls. The clean was great but the lead channel had a very "James Gang, Funk 49" sound. I ended up selling it years ago when I needed the cash and have regretted it since.

EXACTLY why they've always interested me....I'm a bit of a JW fan & have been "semi" looking to try one of these.

:dunno: Might drag the 'Bird down on Thursday to see it :D

Re: Music Man Amps

I played a MM RD85 212 for a lot of years before I sold it to fund my first Boogie rack. They are cool amps but the SS preamp is a little tight and bright and it's natural distorted tone was somewhat lacking. I front ended mine with a Rat and it sounded good and served me well for years.

Re: Music Man Amps

I had an HD-130 for awhile (not as a main amp, but a trader). IMO, it was the best MM amp they made, and it still wasn't something I wanted to keep.
Everytime I plug into a MM, I feel like it's a SS Fender Red knob preamp with a Fender tube output section. Knowing you...it'll be gone in a week if you buy it.

And THIS is exactly why I wouldn't buy it....nothing like picking something up that you'll never be able to unload!!! :dunno:

Re: Music Man Amps

Music Man are excellently made amps! Very high grade components went into these amps and they are proving themselves to be worthy after 25-30 years of being around.
The overdrive is not voiced to today's standards, but all you have to do is get a good stomp box (eg-tube screamer) and you are golden! :fing2:
