Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

MM offer amazing quality. Possibly one of the best companies around. I have played StingRays and they're one of my favorite basses. As for the Silhouette, I've never tried one, but if they're anything like the rest of the company's offerings, I would go for it.

The Ernie Ball Axis... upon which the Peavey Wolfgang is based around, is a far superior guitar.

Ernie Ball out-class Peavey in every department.

I don't know, I think Peavey does a better job of making really crappy amps! :D

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

What are doing differently to make the Subs at those prices, compared to the normal MM range?

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

the subs are made with the some of the less photogenic woods. They can peice together more peices or wood and don't use ash (expensive) for the bodies. They also don't have the same high quality maple in the neck. To compensate, they put a finish on the neck (its a satin finish) which IMHO doesn't feel anywhere near as good as the wax/oil finished higher end models.

Ishmun,

I dont' know how to PM you, but I'd love some sample MP3's.. expecially since you have the Special which is the guitar I'm looking at.. I need a leight weight guitar with a lot of pickup options and that sustains well, has a good neck, etc.. I bet the neck is like the Wolfgang from Peavey being that it's waxed and bare wood.. I loved that neck.. I wish I could get that feel from a short scalled Gibson LP.. Some day I will.. I'm still looking for one to work on.. hehe and butcher.. but in the mean time I'd love to hear your guitar.. You can email me at: DotNetTim AT netscape.com .. Replace the AT of course with the "@" .. I do this so I don't get spammed.. Works by the way too! Keeps spiders from crawling a forum and getting email addy..

i own a sillhoutte special
it rocks man
great strat tone without the price
i think, if i remember correctly, its got the same specs as a deluxe american strat - but MUCH cheaper!

the necks rock man, feel really nice - they are small necks tho, so u should try before u buy.
the pickups are sweet - bell like....lots of ppl dont like the bridge humbucker - but thats easily fixed ;)
if u would like some mp3s, PM me :13:

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

Wow, that's cool man.. I'm shocked that the Axis resonated better.. because my wolfie that I had resonated like a Les Paul I swear it did.. I couldn't believe that a leight weight guitar could sound so good.. It just shows you that most companies are building junk .. I mean if Music Man can build guitars with Basswood and Maple and make them sound that good, what is preventing other companies .. from building even denser guitars with so called "Better Tone" woods from doing so too? It's detail, etc.. Of course, it's an American guitar.. and one of the things we do correctly in this great country is Build Guitars! Hurray for Guitars from the USA..hehehehe..

I am in the saving stages of getting a Silhouette Special. After that will be an Axis. I have tried both the Axis and Wolfgang. I prefer the Axis. The neck feels smoother and more comfortable to me. The guitar seems to resonate better and I think the Wolf pickups are more harsh. That is not to say that the Wolf is a bad guitar. I think it is very well made. I just wouldn't spend the money on it when the Axis can be had.

Mincer,

I saw that Sub Guitar.. it looks cool.. It would be ok for my purposes as well if I could split those Humbuckers.. Hell, I could always add different pots and have it rewired if need be.. I love the one that has the EMG 85 and two single coils..

Here's a pic of the new SUB guitar...like a Silhouette Special, but with 2 HBs:

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

I forgot.. What about sustain? I find that although not written in stone, leighter weight guitars tend not to sustain as well? How about these guitars?

Tim

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

i dont think lighter weight=less sustain...it depends on the quality of the wood, the amp, pickups, player, etc...mine weighs like 6 pounds, and will sustain forever. Also, you can easily rewire them for splitting the HBs...my wiring is the same as the Axis Super Sport with a 5 was switch:
1. Neck HB
2. Inside Coils
3.Bothe HBs
4. Outside coils
5. Bridge HB

Sounds great in every position.

Cool, thanks Kaknight.

I think I'll hold out for one of the Silhouettes or similar then.

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

I have sofar not played one MM guitar I like...but I like most of their basses alot.
But the prices are ridiculous here...and there is so many other alternatives.

Re: Music Man / Ernie Ball Guitars.. Any good?

My neighbour has a Petrucci6 and he loves it. Says it plays faster than any Jackson, Ibanez etc he can think of. The trem on that thing rocks too, he does dives on it down like 3 octaves and it still stays together!! Great instrument.

Though, the guitars probably arent my thing personally. thier basses, though, I always wanted one. Leo = god
