Music Man makes a neck-through

Something Cool
Music Man's new model is the Majesty, which is the new John Petrucci signature model.

I would have ignored it, but I have been to the shop yesterday and holy **** does it sound better than the old Music Man JP.

This is overall interesting because the JPs are Music Man's only guitars with a reasonable nut width. All other Music Man guitars are 41mm, which is their version of "1-5/8", whereas Fender and most other shops interpret 1-5/8" as 42mm. Really annoying. So I don't like the old JP sound-wise (basswood bolt-on 24 frets deep double cutaway just makes the thing too fluffy I guess) and I can't play everything else.

Not they back the 24 frets with a neck-through, and a mahogany neck-through at that, and thanks to John being the sponsor they have to keep a reasonable nut width. Wo-hoo.

Ebony board, angled headplate and new pickups, too. Still Dimarzios but hey at least different.

"Steel trem". Trying to find out whether that means they finally use a steel block.

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

So is the nut width 42mm, 1 11/16, or something else?

No, this is 43mm, at least the old JP was, which is their way to interpret 1-11/16th.

Music Man makes no 42mm nuts on guitars. Stubborn bastids.

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

If I ever got one of those it would be the black one so the shield isn't so eyecatching.

I don't understand how people think MM guitars are ugly. OK, I get that the carbon fiber etch isn't to everyone's taste, but it's a signature model. I think the body itself is pretty awesome.

uOpt: How did the Majesty feel? And what did you think of the mirror inlays?

They will only be delivered to us mortals in July. I have seen John Petrucci parade half a dozen of them on the Berklee show yesterday. Some of them sounded really good.

I am not entirely sure but I think the "black shield" is just the exposed neck-through part, isn't it?

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

My bad, I thought you actually played one.

No, it's actually etched into the bare wood via lasers.

Well nothing a rattlecan of paint can't fix...

Music Man must do something stupid to every single one of their models, do they?

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

Yeah I saw that last night... the black one really hides the fact that its a jazzmaster. Its fantastic. Ergonomics look good too.

Has that cool Mark Morton vibe without the blockiness and its 25.5 . the only thing I dont like about his guitars are the position switch but I dont think one is gonna be neck yngwieing/petruccing leads with a EMG 60. heh.

Seeing Jim Root's interviews unmasked last really humanizes that guy... its a shame to see him playing in two ****ty bands. Seems like a funny guy.

I hate his switch placement too. I got plans for whenever I find one of those sparkle squier jagmasters again. I just missed out on one for $130 a couple weeks back, I'm still fuming.

81 in the neck for shreds yo.

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

I want a dakota red Jazzmaster. I assume the Fender slackers never made an AVRI in that color?

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

I've never been a fan of MM's looks...John Petruci's pickups sound amazing. I've never played one before, I'm more of a Strat/Charvel type of guy and I never saw the need to jump ship. :)

Re: Music Man makes a neck-through

I'm seriously considering a JP. I tried out a JP 6 and it was nice. I like the piezo option as well. I've always been a Fender guy (strat and Tele) but I'd like to try the majesty.
