Music Man's Silent Circut?

On a few EB Music Man guitars they have a device called Silent Circuit that kills the noise and hum of the pickups..... It's on the Silhouette Special model. Does anyone have a clue what it is they are using? I have been told it is not a dummy coil....

I have a set of pickups out of a Special but i don't have the Silent Circuit....

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

It is a dummy coil, I have one- it is a small coil (looks like a little 'barrel' under the pickguard) which cancels the hum in a few positions.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

So it is a dummy coil? It also has an adjustable pot on it. Mine was connected to the output jack. Someone should be making these aftermarket.

I didnt notice if mine had an adjustable pot on it . I replaced the pickguard/pickups with HH..a APH2 & a CC. I soldered on one of those brilliant 'molex' connectors (every guitar should have these) so all I have to do is unscrew the pickguard, and slap another one in... no soldering.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

Mine was a MM-90 Axis. It was some kind of "sensitivity" pot. It said something like that.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

Is the dummy coil in series or parallel with the pickups it cancels hum in? If it has a very low resistance and is in series it shouldn't affect output, right? Formula for resistance in series is R1+R2+R3...etc.

I'm guessing it'd give you a sound similar to a stacked single-only one coil is picking up the strings.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

it does work. i am not sure elcetronically what it does (it seems to be covered in epoxy or something), but it is as quiet as a humbucker, but sounds like a strat.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

It is one of the greatest advancements for singecoil users I can think of. I WANT SOMEONE TO START MAKING THESE!!!

Please?

With my P-90 Axis, I found very little difference- if any at all, between using the circuit and not using it (taking the battery out). I have heard many people talk about this on different boards, but nobody can figure out what it is!

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

The beauty of this system is that you can use them with any pickup, you don't have to spend $270 for three singles.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

Have any of our local engineer types ever seen a schematic of the silent circuit, maybe they could tell us how it works? I understand the concept of a dummy coil, but I don't know why it needs the extra pot and a battery.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

I have it in my Albert Lee. I haven't heard one without the silent circuit, but I can tell you that I really enjoy my AL. IMO it eats every Strat I have ever tried for lunch!

Here is a picture of what the actual circuit looks like. The little black thing with the trimpot on top is the coil.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?

would you mind picking that apart for us....i'm REALLY interested in this...just draw up a quick diagram

edit: unless it's enclosed, then it's totally cool.

EBMM Customer Service are a good bunch of people and would probably be willing to send you the official wiring diagram.

Re: Music Man's Silent Circut?
