Musicians Earplugs : Review

Here's my review of Musicians Earplugs that I said I would post. I said that about 2 months ago.

In Short I love them. They are a perfect accessory for my playing. I will always use them

I have the 25 dB filters.
These are extremely comfortable. When wearing these, i barely notice they are there. They are very easy to insert, easier than foam plugs. Easy to remove. It took a few times to get the insert quick but once i had it it is a breeze.

The sound is great! These just make it quieter. With foam plugs it sounds like all the high end is gone. Not with these. Everything sounds just like the real sound but just not as loud. In between songs I can hear what the other band members are saying, I have to pay attention to them but I can hear them OK. I will always use this style of ear plugs. I can't believe it took me this many years to get them.

The cost was $170 for the pair. For some things $170 is a lot but these are well worth it ( good hearing is priceless). For some people $170 is a lot of money but think in the long run how much you spend onstrings , straps, slides, etc etc. This included the custom mold fitting at the doctors office. I had to pick them up at the office 2 weeks later. I have 60 or 90 days to use them and be able to have them re-molded, for free, if the fit is not quite right. I may pick up a set of the 15 dB filter for another $70, for when I want less sound reduction.

The audiologist told me these should last about 4 years before the custom mold wears out.

Wow they seem really good..do you know what the 15db version is like because that would seem to be enough unless ur doing stadium gigs..but $170 is a lot but your hearing is priceless so definitly will concider these ...

Thanks

Ove been looking at that site now for a good while and i'd recommend everyon who reads this to do so too...im interested n the ER-20 , approx 20db noise reduction but because there not custom made they only cost $12 each, i'm definetly gonna invest in a few pairs of these....

Thanks

Nice review, but I have one question. Do you sing with these in? I have some hearos and when i sing its like I can't really hear myself i just hear the reverberations in my head. Are these like that or can you sing like you normally would without them in?

i dont know if this is exactly what it does but according to what the explanations on the site said is that wit foam plugs your voice will sound boomy or bassy because its not connected to the second turn in the ear canal but wit these they are connected and you voice sounds normal to you.....

Oh ok, thanks for info stevo! Hm I may just have to buy some of these when I get the money.

I use Hearo's and they can be uncomfortable at times. I've been lookin for custom plugs and $170 sounds great to me. I'm definatly gonna check them out. Thanks for posting the site

I'm not sure how they affect you if you sing. The web site says that they will allow you to hear yourself correctly but I have no proof.

I only sing some backup vocals. I actually heard a playback of me singing backups and they were so far outta key it wasn't even funny ( this has nothign to do with the earplugs, -- I just stink at singing LOL)

I think I basically have the same thing. I went to the local mall and stopped in the Miracle Ear store and was fitted for what ar called Musician's Earplugs also. The y took a few molds of my ear to get the fit perfect and even offered for me to come back for a re-fitting in case I found one or both uncomfortable. I paid $80 for the pair. I have both the 15db and 9db filters but find the 9 is more than enough. I may try the 15db again for comparison.

It seems from those descriptions....the 15db version offers a different type of filter? Read the description on each.

(thanks for the review of the high end model)

A skate-punk musician I used to jam with told me some legit stories of horror story hearing loss.

I always use hearos earplugs, even through most nights, as it is noisy where I live sometimes. Of course I use em for practice, but I always want to turn up the PA to hear my singing better (which irritates others in the room)

so, reduction of decibels while retaining some clarity is my 'musician dilemma', the $12 pair may be the cheap answer for me. Thanks

I have got a pair of alpine earplugs for €27 and those things suck.
http://www.alpine.nl/test/start.asp?PageId=020101#

They look very similar to the er-20 and have 2 types of tubes for db regulation. I sing too and have a hard time with plugs in. I always end up taking the damn things out or removing the tubes so I can at least hear something. The alpine's are marketed in the same way as the er-20, supposed to only dampen the sounds and you can still hear everything correctly. Well I can hear myself breathing through my nose! All high freq's seem cut off and my guitar just sounds awfull with these things in. After 3 hours of pracise I tend to become a bit confused and disoriented too because of the damn earplugs.

IMHO the best earplugs would be the custom made (way too) expensive ones. As soon as I got more cash to spare I'll get some good earplugs. Don't get sucked in by BS marketing around cheap earplugs.

thanks for the info on the low end earplug versions. the padistortion clip of the jb sounds cool - I can relate to the speed palm muting sounds.

Re: Musicians Earplugs : Review

If you have any problem with ear plugs then change sound shuffle and set it into normal equalizer mode.

Re: Musicians Earplugs : Review

I've been using etymotics for over 10 years (singing and playing guitar). Love them and would never go back to foam unless I was in a pinch and couldn't get my hands on my ety... And I'd be pretty bummed. I even ear them at shows.

Re: Musicians Earplugs : Review

11 years go by... has there been any kind of technological advancements in musician earplugs yet? I always have enough trouble singing so musician earplugs make it even more difficult (although they help me raise my natural singing volume).
