Musicman Axis

Re: Musicman Axis

This is what became of the EVH models, The necks are great...most of the time I do not care for a 1 5/8 nut width but these are ok...The pickups are ok...a friend of mine has one with a 59 in the neck and a Custom in the bridge...WOW what a killer guitar it is! I would never buy one new because I really don't like EBMM...but maybe thats just me. Are you looking at one with the Floyd or a standard bar...

Re: Musicman Axis

I had one for a while. Beautiful guitar but my late 80's MIJ Fender Squire Strat with the 59 Trembucker sounded so much better (and cost me only about $200!) that I sold the Axis. The neck is a little slimmer, rounder and narrower on the Axis than I prefer too.

Re: Musicman Axis

I haven't played one in a while, but I remember the neck being really sweet. The one I'm looking at is a swamp ash one piece body, rosewood/maple board, hard tail bridge, and two P-90s. I've been loking fo a tele-type guitar for a while, and I saw this one used for $500 w/EB hard case. I never thought I would want an axis, I am pretty much into the classics, but I think it is growing on me...

Re: Musicman Axis

It's not basswood, the Axis' with the MM-90s are all swamp ash. It's an older one, so it doesn't have the maple cap. It has a battery powered noise reduction circuit that I guess can be tapered off through a pot inside the body of the guitar, or you can take the battery out and not use it at all. Either way, it is not supposed to affect the tone at all, just eliminate the 60 cycle hum. As for the shape, I think it is growing on me. The tele shape is one of my favorites. It's simple, and kind of looks like a guitar that's not quite finished yet. I don't know why but I like guitars based on that classic shape. I think I like the look of a maple neck on these better, but rosewood may add some warmth to it. The beauty of bolt-on is that I can change it if I want! I've never really owned a rosewood neck for any length of time, its always been straight up maple, or aluminum.

Re: Musicman Axis

I have one- the basswood body/quilt maple top Floyd model. I love it, I bought it new and it's built like a tank. The neck, as it is merely oiled, needs frequest truss rod adjustments, which are a piece of cake with the location of the adjustment nut. Intonation is still dead on, 4 years after. My only complaint is I'm used to 1 11/16" nuts, and the 1 5/8" nut is too narrow for my big hands- I wish they had an option for a wider nut. The tone is great, but the pickups are geared toward very high gain/ Soldano type amps- I'm thinking of some more vintage style pickups to suit my tasts as I get older, and installing a push/pull coil tap.

I would, however, try to get a new one. I've seen used ones at Guitar Center for around $700, and they didn't play well and needed a complete new setup.

Re: Musicman Axis

I think they're great guitars. Fantastic necks (sort of a boutique take on the 70s fender neck), great wood selection and quality overall.
