must have effects?

I'm going into the studio to record in two weeks. I've been craving a new piece of equipment...are there any must have pedal effects either for lead or rhythm tone?

My current setup is a SG (59n/custom) into a DSL. The only pedal I use at the moment is a fatboost for solos. Music is fast rock/punk, ac/dc-like tone.

Any suggestions?

Re: must have effects?

Either for lead or rhythm tone...something to maybe thicken up the sound? Make it more in your face? I don't know exactly.

$100 - $200.

Re: must have effects?

For rythm stuff, i recently got a Boss CS-3 compression/sustainer. This has really helped my tone by evening out my pick attack on fast rythym parts. Not really a 'must have' but I think you would benefit from it if your were going into the studio for recording.

Boss DS-1. Don't leave home without it.

Damn good advise! It should be known that our good buddy Lew had a MIJ DS-1...the MIT do not sound as good until after Mr. Stratdeluxer gets done with it. If I were you I would get a DS-1 and an SD-1 and get them both modded by Stratdeluxer, and then do as Lew says...do not leave home without them!!!

Re: must have effects?

Just about every studio I've ever set foot in had piles of gear -- rackmounted effects, pedals, amps, instruments, etc. -- laying about. If you've got the time, try out some of their stuff. If you end up liking it, you'll know what to go shopping for once you're done and no longer have access to it.

Re: must have effects?

Nothing. Save your money, you will need it if you're going into the studio.
If the engineer is good enough, you won't need any additional gear to make the sound 'thicker'.

Yeah, but I also don't want to have a produced sound on record that I won't be able to replicate when playing live...that's why I was curious about getting some effects before I go in.

I guess I'll see what they've got there, and maybe pick up some new toys afterward!

Re: must have effects?

For me, reverb is essential on cleans and leads.

Ah, don't worry about how to play it live- the goal is to go in and make a great *record*. The studio will have tons of effects, and sadly cost about 3x what you budgeted for it.

100% agreement with this statement. Mixing my album cost $9k.

+1 Aslong as you have YOUR sound together it's the engineers job to
capture it. Any good studio has plenty of gizmo's to fatten your sound
up. Or you can double track yourself. Only thing I can think of is a
noise gate? (if ya use single coils?) I had a really anul engineer that
woundn't record my Stratocaster without a noise gate  But a
Noise gate isn't gonna improve your tone. Just makes the engineers job
easier. if no one complains save your money!! You'll need it! Overduds
and Mix downs get real expencieve.
EDIT: DAMMIT! YOU GUY'S TYPE FASTER THAN ME. :smack:

To paraphrase my old buddy Lew,

MXR Dynacomp: don't leave home without it.

If you didn't need an effect to make your songs sound good last week, you probably won't need it to make your songs sound good two weeks from now. You're paying the engineer good money to sound good, help make sure you get your moneys worth by not waisting his time.....after all, his waisted time costs you money.

Just my opinion.

Re: must have effects?

IMO for studio a compressor is pretty essential. I personally like the CS-3 after it's modded, or the stock Keeley Compressor (and who wouldn't like one stock!). The Dynacomp just completely changes the tone and IMO when I work hard to get my tone, my pedals shouldn't destroy my efforts. The CS-3 is pretty transparent, but sounds pretty thin and flabby, and has a good amount of noise. Modding it to help these is pretty easy.

Re: must have effects?

I think a good pedal to own is the Line 6 Blue modulation pedal. It has an endless amount of cool effects from the past few decades, plus it's the easiest pedal to navigate and store patches. If you're recording, and want a part in your song to have more texture or vibe, it's always fun to turn the unit's rotary dial till somthing cool pops up. Plus, if you do use it to record, you can have 4 stored sounds on one pedal, making it great for live.
