Re: Must Have Effects!!

Leads, man! And cleans!!

To me, leads sound super dry and empty without some reverb or a super fast delay set low in the mix.

Cleans are just...blah, they NEED reverb to sound good!

But speaking of weird things in extreme metal... for fun today with the band, I set up my ultra channel for a slight OD, gain at maybe 3, like a light OD Satch type tone...And it sounded amazing in the mix! I needed to switch back to the crunch channel for leads, needed the extra gain, but for rythm, it made everything sound so clear. After discovering this, I went and lowered my other guitarist's gain by 2 notches...he never noticed, but everything sounded smoother, clearer, and tighter.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Phaser, I love getting an awesome swooshing effect for some solos or an intro.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Only one effect.... my Peterson Strobostomp, of course. It's the one pedal I won't do without. Playing perfectly in tune is essential... I'd take it over any distortion, delay, chorus pedal etc.

Outside of tuners (which everyone, I don't care how good your ear perception of pitch is... needs), I'd go with a reverb. A little reverb can really enhance your cleans and overdrive. I use a little of an old-school 2 spring Accutronics on my Fargen Epic 30 DC and it adds a bit more texture and life to the tones. It thickens up the overdrive ever so slightly too... so it really does make a great tone even better (if you make it really noticeable, it will detract from the tone though).

I love my Pro Analog Supa Quack wah, but I try to stay away from using it too much (for obvious reasons... Kirk Hammett). I do use my Pro Analog Dual Drive alot for leads, so I'd almost call that an imperative pedal.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

I recently have been jamming with a friend's band and they play classic rock, blues, some garage-style rock, a punk tune here and there and stuff like that. With the kind of music they play effects aren't really needed so all I use is the guitar straight into the amp, with a delay pedal in the effects loop.

...and I'm a diehard effects addict.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Compressor, Compressor, Compressor, thats all I gotta say, it just smoothens out the playing, really tightens up the sound and well . . . helps get those notes jumping off the board at a lower volume

Re: Must Have Effects!!

I don't like delay, i don't like compression and i hate chorus and flanging with a passion. I'm not much of a wah or phaser kinda guy either.

I'd go with an overdrive or EQ pedal. Or maybe a fuzz.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

I voted other because the Budda Wah pedal is different than a cry baby I think... but yeah the budda is my favorite pedal.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Tough question.

If it's my MESA, I don't need a OD box of any kind. My Marshall does.

But assuming the MESA....I think the Phaser would edge out an ANALOG delay by a hair. I like using the phaser as a pseudo chorus pedal for high gain leads (think Dave Murray), and as a chorus for Clean sounds (think opening of Freebird when the very subtle phased clean part comes in)

Re: Must Have Effects!!

i said digital delay, since most of the best overdrive/distortion sounds come from an amps overdrive channel, i love my 5150 distortion.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Delay for sure-actually a tube tape echo is more of what I'd like.

You see, a my tele and a delay would kick your ass and kick it again in about 345 millisec.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

I went delay, but it depends a lot on what amp you have. My rectoverb has plenty of gain and it already has reverb. I use delay on the clean channel prenty much the whole time it's on. Second I would probably say chorus, which I also use on the clean channel most of the time.

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Klon Centaur.....my tonal security blanket! No matter how bad someone's amp sounds, I plug that in, and everything's all better. LOL

Re: Must Have Effects!!

Hmm, these days i guess my POD with the 4 button footswitch i got off ebay recently. Can plug into an amp of a sort and have the basic pallet of sounds i usually need + a helluva lot more. Then i suppose wah
