Mustain VS JB/Jazz

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

www.dictionary.com said:
Voiced:
3. a range of such sounds distinctive to one person, or to a type of person or animal: Her voice is commanding.
5. a sound likened to or resembling vocal utterance: the voice of the wind.

I rest my case.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

Maybe I can help here.

Passives and Actives, voiced similar to each other or not, do NOT sound the same. I think overall, they are more different than similar. Doesn't matter if we are comparing Jazz/JB Vs. Mustaine Set to EMG HZ's Vs. 81/85's.

By shear virtue of the amount of gain actives have on tap, they can't sound the same. Sure, the might share some of the same qualities, but if they sounded exactly the same, why make two different products?

Actives have the potential to slam the front end of an amp in a way that passives simply cannot.

I personally don't care for actives, but thats me. SD's marketing, at least in my opinion, is on point with the Mustaine Set. They are targeting someone who wants a higher output Jazz/JB, but still wants to retain some of the tonal characteristics the passive models have.

Another comparison would be the Custom series pickups. All of them have similar output, but the difference in magnets makes a world of difference in the way they sound.

Not taking sides here bros, this is just my opinion. As a dealer, I've heard ALOT of pickups, so I'm basing my opinions on what I hear, not what I've read.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

However, do they not sound the same? Of course the actives are going to be higher output, higher gain, but the overall sound ("voice") will be the same, just as if it was the same person singing one song softly and singing another song much louder.

If this is not the case, like I said, then SD needs to fix their marketing ad for the set.
For anyone willing to listen to reason, an active pickup being wound with the same voicing as a passive does NOT mean they will sound the same. The preamp and battery being in the circuit is going to change the tone.

How do I know this? Experience with both active and passive pickups, and lots of it.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

they are DEFINITELY hotter, hotter than my 18v EMGs too for sure
In case you don't see the other thread, I'll post it here, too...

The 18v EMG mod doesn't make them any hotter. In fact, it has the opposite effect. It increases headroom, making the pickups sound cleaner..

hotter has nothing to do with gainier sounding. Hot as in OUTPUT. I had a 9v/18v push pull pot and the 18v had more output.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

In case anyone was wondering, I like either Apple pie or Key Lime pie.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

Do you know how they had it wired to turn the second battery on and off?

i know it was just a regular 25K tone push/pull and 9v was with it down and pulling it up added the 2nd battery in series, i didn't take a look at the schematic or the wiring. I do have the setup pulled out of my guitar and will possibly be selling it soon with the push/pull setup included all wired up.

Re: Mustain VS JB/Jazz

I like my Mustaine's alot, they sound really powerfull and crushing, I don't think this set has alot in common with the jb.
The JB sounds rawer and not as clear, while the mustaines are clearer and have more output.

Semi-noob question....if you turned the volume pot/s on the guitar DOWN with the Mustains, and UP on the JB/Jazz, Would they THEN sound similar?
