Mustang Bass GAS

Hi everyone,

I played a mustang bass this weekend and loved how it feels. It seems to be kinda punchy with more high-end than a regular P or I guess even a J bass? I'm dying to order one - anyone want to confirm or deny me? =) I'm not making a mistake am i? As a guitar person trying to pickup (no pun intended) the occasional bass, i was hoping this would be my first and only one...

Re: Mustang Bass GAS

I have thought about the broncho bass with the strat style single coil. You could put a Dimarzio Super Distortion S in that and tune it as a Piccolo bass with the proper strings tuned to C. The broncho and mustang bass have been popular as punk instuments earning them the nickname "growlers".

Re: Mustang Bass GAS

I wouldn't go for a short scale bass. There's a major lack of depth with a short scale instrument that you don't get with the full 34."

They're fun to play around with, they're really easy for a guitar player to get adjusted to, they're great for a kid to learn on- but getting a full scale bass with a 1.5" nut is nearly as easy to play and it'll generally sound better.

sounding better is highly subjective. it's true that it won't sound as full but whether or not it sounds better is up to you to decide. those short scale basses are really fun to play. not sure if this is true but i heard most of the early rolling stones stuff was recorded with a short scale bass. can anyone confirm or deny this?

Very cool pieces. Fun to play, fast necks.

If you want a 69 competition model my buddy has one for sale.

Re: Mustang Bass GAS

I found a quote from a fender site which says that it was used on the live version of talking head's psycho killer. I downloaded it and listened to it. It does lack a little in the bottom end, but it's not bad. I may still do it. You can tell the difference if you listen to the original version of the track.

This is in no way an endorsement of talking heads =P

Re: Mustang Bass GAS

If you replaced the bridge with a Leo Quann I am sure you could improve tone considerably.
