I've been looking for a modern octave divider that sounds like the old Mutron.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd uses the Mutron. He's not a favorite player of mine but he does get a cool tone when he kicks in the Mutron.

My Fulltone Ultimate Octave and Prescription Electronics Experience pedal couldn't quite get that tone.

So I guess I'm asking what modern unit might be a clone of the old Mutron?

Re: Mutrom Octave Divider

Lew, sorry to hear the Ultimate Octave is still not working out for you...

Anyway, on to the Mu-Tron, I used one a few years ago that belonged to a local studio...cool unit but very different than an Octavia in ways, still similar in others. FWIW, Kenny used a Roger Mayer Octavia when he recorded Blue on Black but a year or so later switched to a Foxrox Captian Coconut. You can read a little about that here...

Anyway, back to the Mu-tron. I really liked that octave unit, it has a killer octave down as well as a neat sort of ring modish octave up feature...however they are big, only run on wall power and cost well over a thousand dollars in good working order most of the time these days. After a LOT of searching and trying various units I ended up with a Foxrox Octron and I couldn't be happier...you get a sub octave that rivals the Mu-Tron and stomps the old classic DOD or Boss sub octave units plus it has a killer octave up wiht lots of features including a mode switch that will make it kind of ring mod like more a more clean pure octave tone it also have a tone control for the octave up and a tone control for the octave down plus a gain control for the octave up to get a really fuzzy octave sound or a more laid back octave up sound plus it also has the ability to let you blend in as much of your "clean" signal as you want to use. The only thing thats any better IMO is the Octron II which gives you seperate switches for each octave but Im quite happy with the Octron as is to be honest!

If you want to see a good demo that shows most of the features check out these 2 clips...also FWIW, Dave Fox makes some of the best boxes a man can buy!

You might also be interested in the Octron II. It has external controls that allow you to mix the three octaves to taste with the added benefit of on-off switches for each in addition to the overall bypass switch. Check out wahwah's "The Death of Octavius" which was recorded using an Octron II:

Re: Mutrom Octave Divider

Thanks guys.

The octave dividing effect I'm looking for is an octave down. Not an octave up.

I sold the Ultimate Octave and ship it out in the morning. I bought it used and resold it for what I paid for it so no biggie. It's a cool pedal but I want the octave to go down and the UO is an octave up unit.

Re: Mutrom Octave Divider

The octave down is the strongest sound in the Octron. With both the octave up and dry signal turned off the octave down turns the guitar into a bass.

Lew: There are a few great sub octave effects out there...the old brown Boss OC-2 is killer, when I got my Foxrox Octron I tweaked it to sound like my old Boss pedal, the DOD Octoplus is actually a cool pedal but IMO the Boss is better. Another option is the EBS Octabass...EBS is a company that makes mostly bass gear but their Octabass pedal works quite well on guitar, this is actually what Jeff Beck is using these days. If you can find them and afford them the old Maestro OB-1 and OB-2 are both great and Im also a big fan of the Electro Harmonix Octave Multiplexer.

All that said the Foxrox Octron does offer a great octave down effect and solid as a rock tracking PLUS it does still have the octavia (octave up) effect so if you ever get the itch for that it's still there.

I've only heard it on YouTube, but it seems like the Octron might fill the bill.

I'm after that sound Kenny Wayne Shepherd got on a couple of tunes - I was told that was an old Mutron. I have played with a Mutron and liked it a lot - but that was like thirty years ago! LOL!

Im almost positive Kenny used the Roger Mayer Octavia, the Rocket Shop version but it might have been an old Mu-Tron for the studio version...not sure.

What I do know is that the Octron has a better octave down feature than the old DOD or my old MIJ Boss octave unit (it sounds great but tracks better) and the octavia (octave up) feature when combined with a little compresion from the amp and something like a Tubescreamer will NAIL the tone Kenny got on Blue on Black and if you put it with a good Fuzz Face you are straight into early Experience or Band of Gypsies tones.
