MXR 10 Band Eq or Boss GE-7

The Boss GE-7 is widely regarded as a good EQ pedal. Anyone like the MXR M-108 better? It comes with a power adapter, but doesn't take batteries at all. It does have LED's and a slider for gain. I'm wondering which to buy to work with my Valvtronix AD-60 1x12 combo.

That's a good Q. I think we know which is the more popular one, which I think is the Boss.
That being said, I have an old GE-7, and I really don't like it. I think it muddies up the sound when it's in standby, and is too noisy when activated. I've never been able to get the hang of this pedal!!

If your old Boss is made in Japan it might be worth a little more if you sell it. I've been checking around & the Japanese made GE-7 are "supposed" to be better. Seems like everything older is better in this field.

My experience and notes with the GE-7:

Durable. Nice sliders. Nice "clicked" default on sliders. Good db boost capabilities. Expensive. Noisy.

Sorry, but for me. No matter how many things its got going for it...add noise - and it has to go.

Guitarist ... same with me. Why add an EQ if I then have to add a noise gate? Why not just get a killer head and be done with it ... which is what I did.

Mkf411 -- yes, mine is an old Japanese one from the mid 80's. I now loan it out to friends to use in the studio. I would never sell it, but would probably give it away to someone in dire need, which I just did to a forum member with my old Morely Pro Volume/Wah.

I've heard that the noise only applies when the pedal is used infront of the amp, but is silent in the fx loop?

I bought the GE-7 and am running it through the effects loop on my Vox Valvetronix AD-60 1x12 combo. It doesn't add much noise that I notice. It really helps the overall tone. Notes ring clearer and chords are much less mushy. I was going to sell the Valvetronix but now I may keep it. It's cool for home use.

I have a GE7 and love it althought it's much noisier in front of the amp and almost churchmouse quiet in the FX loop.

Someone mentioned having their GE7 modded to be much quieter in both areas, does anyone know who can do this mod?

He's currently sold out, but you could always email him and ask when he's going to re-stock.

I just read on another forum that he had a BMW's firewall fall on his arm and cut him down to the muscle (he works as a technition for BMW), so he won't me able to do mods for awhile.

Aside from quick test drives in stores I don't have experience with the MXR but I use a mid-80s MIJ GE7 for years and I like it. With a near-meltdown-gain setting it really adds some hiss if you put in the FX loop. Well, it is for live use and not for studio, if you want hi-fi quality you'd better start searching for some rack-mount 32-band EQ ;) (not a bad idea, anyway: Tony Rombola gets a good sound using studio quality EQs) If you don't play with maximum gain the hiss is not noticable. I never worried about noise, anyway. I've lost hearing above 12KHz :D

I have used both the GE-7 and the MXR M-108. I really like the MXR. Before that i was using a GE-7, but I wanted to step up to something with more range and the MXR really did it for me. I use in an effects loop in front of both an Marshall and a Randall. It just brings everything to life, and I do use a NS-2, always have, to cut the noise, and the there is no problem when throwing an NS-2 into the mix.
