MXR Classic Distortion pedals are back at GC

For anyone who was interested in the MXR Classic Distortion pedals that GC had last fall for like $30 and sold out really fast, a friend called me Saturday and said they have another batch in stock now. I went over to my local GC Sunday and did a little early Christmas shopping for a couple of guitar playing friends.
The price is $40 now, but still a great deal. The pedal sounds excellent. It's a thick, British sounding overdrive. It sounds excellent in front of an already overdriven amp for a thick, sustaining lead sound that makes tapping and legato playing easy.

Thay've also got a new BBE distortion pedal on sale. $40 for the BBE American Metal pedal. I haven't tried this one yet. The friend I talked to Saturday said it sounds better than his Metal Zone, and allows you to get a more moderate overdrive sound with the gain at lower settings. He picked one up for me. At $40, I thought it can't hurt to have a few more guitar tones on hand.

cool. i already knew about the MXR classic, but not the BBE AM. sounds interesting, looking forward to a review of that one;)

Re: MXR Classic Distortion pedals are back at GC

is the BBE the same as the crusher rebranded?

isn't the Classic the same as the Dist III and Blood Drive?

Re: MXR Classic Distortion pedals are back at GC

Back in fall, some of the folks here said the Classic Distortion is really the Distortion III in a different color box and cheaper price tag.

As for whether the BBE pedal is actually the Crusher, I don't know. I haven't heard either one yet.

actually, i asked about the classic distortion vs. distortion III at GC last week, and the guy behind the counter told me straight out that the classic has less gain and isn't quite as punchy, rather smoother. i can see that:scratchch

That is my understanding as well. I have not pulled mine apart yet, but the pictures I saw show a DS III board in the GC case.

I got mine today! in store it sounded like a Rat to my ears playing a PRS SE into it into a marshall MG clean channel. the cool thing about it is its clean on 0 and gets rather hairy in a modded JCM800 vein. The tone stack is varied from warm sustaining rhythms to screeching treble leads. You can crank the volume well past unity to push the preamp tubes too.

I just cracked her open and saw a nice lil PCB with a TL072CP IC, 2 red LEDs. Seems to be a straight forward Marshall Guv'nor clone.

True bypass, PCB looks similar to my crunchbox, great quality honestly. $43 out the door!

I just got the overdrive for a friend who newly discovered guitar. I think they're pretty good.

I just got one- have yet to try it out, but seemed a steal. It's sitting next to my 29.99 Boss DS-1

save a few cap values...the ZW OD, Dist. III, Classic Dist. and Coffin Case Blood Drive are all the same circuits.

I just saw gutshots of the crusher in freestompboxes.org

the AM64 - American metal seems to have a similar gain structure as the crusher btw. I just saw a gut shot and it has 2 LEDS and TL072CP IC aswell. though the tonestack and layouts are completely different. I hated the crusher and I like the AM64 alot!
