MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

I saw them when I went to return my BBE Two Timer Delay yesterday at Guitar Center. I will never buy another BBE product. This is the second time i've been let down. I rather wait and get a good Duncan pedal well worth the money .
The Mxrs are petty good copies of their old designs from waht I have read.

i should definitely get one, to add to my matching classic distortion:naughty:

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

I just stopped by the local GC to see if they had anything interesting at their 4th of July sale and they had these...at the rock bottom sale price of $29.00! A whole 99 cents off of the regular price! I hate the whole concept of "list" prices. :)

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

i have one. from what i understand it is a rehoused GT-OD. there is a switch on the circuit board. that lets you go from a TS type pedal to a little more gain and with out the mid hump. it is the only piece of gear i have left right now. for the money it is a real cool pedal. i would not mind having another so i could set the switches different in them.

Jolly when you get it tell us what you think! If it's still on sale I may pick one up if you approve. It's such a great deal for an MXR pedal.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

would one of you guys be so kind as to get one for me and send it on to Australia? GC does not ship to AUS.

I'll help you out as long as I can give it a test drive before I send it down :)

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

I might pop into GC tomorrow and see if they have any left.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

I walked into GC at 4PM, just to see if they had any left. They told me they just sold a whole pile of them this weekend and only had 1 left!

For 29 bucks, I'd be a fool not to. I tried it out on their little practice amp demo rack, and it sounded pretty decent, so I bought the last boxed up one they had. After dinner, I'll run it into all my amps and see where it shines.

Thanks for the heads up, Jolly!

I dunno. I've had my BBE wah for about 1.5 years now and LOVE it. The Dunlop Crybaby that I gigged for the previous 10 years is LONG gone and long forgotten.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

What does everyone think so far?

Jolly. I'm so glad you gave me a heads up for that $29 MXR Classic OD.
It's basically a Tubescreamer with less mid spike and less of that clean/dist mix that Ibanez Tubescreamers have.

I've been messing with it, realizing I miss the authentic Tubescreamer sound, as the Klon has been the only OD pedal I've used for years.

I have a feeling you should NOT mess with the switch inside, but leave it alone. One guy on the gearpage thread said flicking the switch made it sound thinner.

Anyway, I've finally found the perfect use for the pedal.

On my Bogner XTC with a pushed clean tone and a bit of MXR and a strat, I'm getting a beautiful blues tone ala Stevie......sorta like him with a Dumble OD Special and Tubescreamer.

My Matchless Chieftain loves the pedal, and turns an edgy clean tone into a heavy rock JTM 45 sound. Awesome!

I also can use it to turn a Marshall or Bogner heavy tone into a nice solo tone. When I run an amp like that at low volume, I may use the MXR to smooth out the gain into a liquid solo tone, just for noodling, rather than a modeling amp.

My Gibson Goldtone 30W EL-84 amp hasn't been tried yet, but since it's like a gainy Vox AC-30, I can't wait to hear that with the MXR and both LP and strat. That amp especially loves Alnico 2 pickups, so I'm excited to hear the SG Diablo/MXR/Goldtone. It's too late to let that rip right now.

To me, the pedal sounds best with volume and tone at 10:00, and then set the gain where you like it.

Oh yeah, and the pedal sold out mid Tuesday. If you snoozed over the Independence Day weekend, you lost. $100 pedal for $29. So glad I saw your thread, ran down and grabbed the last one they had.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

You never hear a dog thing about eraly MXR overdrives/distortions. Certainly they must have been used on many classic recordings we know. The Dod 250 Gray, the Boss OD-1, the Ibby Tubescreamer , and the Rat all get the lions share of the noteriety.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

Even at $40, they're still a bargain. I've been digging mine, and stoked I got it for $32 out the door on Independence Day's sale.

It reminds me why the Tubescreamer is such a classic. I even had an 83 TS-9 original, and think I like this MXR Classic OD even more. The Tubescreamer/Marshall combo was popular in the 80's, and when I use it now, I dig it just as much. To my ears, the MXR reminds me more of a Boss OD-1 (discontinued years ago)....even if it's not the same, it sounds like one.

Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That

I went by my local GC Monday, and they had about 25 in stock. I went ahead and picked up another for $29.
