Jolly. I'm so glad you gave me a heads up for that $29 MXR Classic OD.
It's basically a Tubescreamer with less mid spike and less of that clean/dist mix that Ibanez Tubescreamers have.
I've been messing with it, realizing I miss the authentic Tubescreamer sound, as the Klon has been the only OD pedal I've used for years.
I have a feeling you should NOT mess with the switch inside, but leave it alone. One guy on the gearpage thread said flicking the switch made it sound thinner.
Anyway, I've finally found the perfect use for the pedal.
On my Bogner XTC with a pushed clean tone and a bit of MXR and a strat, I'm getting a beautiful blues tone ala Stevie......sorta like him with a Dumble OD Special and Tubescreamer.
My Matchless Chieftain loves the pedal, and turns an edgy clean tone into a heavy rock JTM 45 sound. Awesome!
I also can use it to turn a Marshall or Bogner heavy tone into a nice solo tone. When I run an amp like that at low volume, I may use the MXR to smooth out the gain into a liquid solo tone, just for noodling, rather than a modeling amp.
My Gibson Goldtone 30W EL-84 amp hasn't been tried yet, but since it's like a gainy Vox AC-30, I can't wait to hear that with the MXR and both LP and strat. That amp especially loves Alnico 2 pickups, so I'm excited to hear the SG Diablo/MXR/Goldtone. It's too late to let that rip right now.
To me, the pedal sounds best with volume and tone at 10:00, and then set the gain where you like it.
Oh yeah, and the pedal sold out mid Tuesday. If you snoozed over the Independence Day weekend, you lost. $100 pedal for $29. So glad I saw your thread, ran down and grabbed the last one they had.
