Re: MXR Classic Overdrive For $29.99, Surely It's Worth That
I like it because it's a classic circuit that works well with certain amps and gain structures. I've surprised myself by hearing it sound awesome on amps like the Bogner, Matchless, and Goldtone. I use it mostly to boost the Jubilee's gain channel into meltdown. I was shocked to hear it sound like complete crap on the Jubilee's clean channel. It proves that OD's and amps need to melt together, or the combo is worthless.
And that's why you'll hear so many varying opinions on any OD pedal.
The only way to know is to try it. Anyone who says an OD sucks or is mediocre is trying it on an amp it doesn't work with. The glowing reviews always come from players with a guitar and amp that the OD melds with perfectly. That's the way it is with OD pedals.
I absolutely love the pedal, and am glad I spent that small $29. But, if it sucks on certain amps, I won't fault the pedal. I'll just use it on guitar/amp combos that sound great with it. So far, it does the SRV edgy clean really well, and takes highgain amps into meltdown with humbuckers. Some other applications, I know the Klon would kill it.
