MXR Custom Badass '78

I've read on forums people if the "'78" is in reference to EVH. Whether it is or isn't it sounds good from the clip, IMO.

And for $80, it seems like a good deal.

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

literally just got them at the shop today

it's not gona replace my Box of Rock or anything but it's a solid distortion pedal -- think a DS-1 that actually sounds cool.

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

^ the fact that you still shop at GC when you know where Wendell and I work makes my friggin head spin

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

Sounds like a slightly smoothed out Distortion +. Should make a nice goose for a NMV amp.

yep, just checked wikipedia, "The Boss DS-1 is a distortion pedal for guitar, manufactured by the Roland Corporation under the brand name Boss since 1978"

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

sounds like a goosed up MXR Distortion + .. I used one for years .. not a bad pedal at all

I wish more demo clips wouldn't sound like I just walked into GC and there's that guy playing the same wanky licks ..

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

Well, maybe I don't need a '78 then, since I already have a modded DS-1. I think maybe my main attraction it to its looks, anyway. It's a cool-looking stompbox.

Still, I'd like to A/B it against my Recto DS-1 just to see.

As long as MXR is re-packaging booteek mods of classic pedals into new, affordable, mass-produced (if not terribly original nor creative) designs, I wish to hell they'd give us an '84 smallbox Rat in a normal MXR enclosure. I'd buy one in a second, since I've had a DIY one on the shelf for a frikkin' year and still haven't gotten around to finishing it.

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

The MXR Distortion + and Boss DS-1 Distortion are NOT the same thing. It seems a few folks aren't distinquishing between the two in this thread.

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

Cool, it should be dry enough now:1:

1978 had a lot of guitar stuff going on, hard to tell what they were referring to. But, it definitely sounds better than a stock DS-1 from the clip (not that I'm saying it has any relation to one), may need to check one out.

The pedal building community has back engineered and say its a modded DS-1. The crunch button replaces the silicon diodes with LEDs for gain which I love. The best dirt pedals to my ear all use LED for distortion

Re: MXR Custom Badass '78

I bought one a while back and it sounded great when used with my Peavey Classic 30. Traded that amp for the Traynor YCV40, which I like much more than the Peavey, but the Custom Badass '78 didn't jive with the amp. Too thin sounding. Traded it in on mic.
