MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

what can you guys tell me about this one?

its sounds kind of tubescreamy to me, but with a little more grit (which i think i like, from what i hear in the videos). something like jhon mayer on the TRY! live sessions maybe?

how about the mids? i want that Ts mid punch, and i guess this one nails it.

ive been looking for a TS style for a while now. would you recommend this one?

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

It definately is a good pedal but it is a little more expensive than the best tubescreamer I've played. The Bad Monkey from Digitech is analog and it's not technically a tubescreamer. It's not transparent like tubescreamers are supposed to be but it is like an Ibanez Tubescreamer with more balls. The GT-OD is good but it doesn't have the brawn of the Bad Monkey. And they are only $50 new.

Just my opinion.

EDIT- The mids are good on both these pedals but much better on the bad monkey as you can control the tone with 2 EQ controls.

Luke Duke has one...maybe I can get him to chime in on this...

BTW and FWIW...I wouldn't call any TS or TS style pedal transparent in any way...they for sure have a tone of their own...

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

99.99 from musicians friend for the gt-od
179.99 from the same place for a ts-808
99.99, same place, for a ts-9

It's not more expensive than a tube screamer unless you get a used ts-7. I've only seen the video demos on youtube, looks like a great pedal but I prefer the DIY tubescreamer copies. Mine is a SD-1 with a monte allums mod kit - which, even if you buy everying new, is still more than $100 less than the ts-808 ibanez makes.

I haven't gotten the chance to a/b it against a modern 808 yet, though. If you like the MXR, from the youtube clips it looks like a great sounding pedal. I'd go for it.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

I've got one, I love it!

In my opinion it's not tubescreamer-ish. It has a flatter frequency response by far, as well as more volume and grit on tap.

I picked mine up at GC used. I like it so much that it bumped my Banzai Cold Fusion (Klon clone). It sounds nice into a clean or dirty amp, it also sounds great stacked with a OD/Dist.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

i actually just bought one (still waiting for it in the mail) since i've been curious about it for a while. from the proguitarshop demo of it on youtube it seems like it could be cool.

FWIW . . . i prefer the tone of the GT-OD over any Ibanez over drive pedal !

YMMV, but i really like it !
There are NOT many Toob-screamer clones i will buy over the GT-OD.

You might also want to try the BBE Green Screamer; and the Digitech Bad Monkey. They get a lot of good reviews.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

i got the GTOD cause i got a great deal on it, i can sell it afterwards if i repent.

what i found out its that its a VERY solid overdrive, but not very different to everything else in the market.

its noticeably less harsh than a TS using it by itself... thou i miss the mids on the ts.

overall i think im gonna keep it for a while. btw the proguitarshop review is spot on, its that exact sound.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

I brought this back up because I need a few good ODs but do not think one has to spend for a boutique hand wired pedal. MXR makes great stuff!
I need something to add grit and also do the Plexi thing.
Anyone compare to the MXR 1978 OD???

Agreed. Also in clean boost mode it is in fact very clean, the gain dial covers much more ground than any other od pedals in this price range, from very clean to all out distortion. Sounds amazing through clean channel, sounds amazing as a boost over a gain channel. If I could only own one od pedal GT-OD would be it.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

Why not just get a classic OD at GC for $40 bucks? It has been confirmed that it's the exact same pedal.

More of everything . Its a great pedal. More output, more gain, more definition, more warmth, more bass. I find its very similar in sound to a fulldrive in mosfet mode. It is (after the fulldrive) about my favourite ts based overdrive. Its a perfect match especially for marshall amps.
HOwever, the GTOD is also sold as the "classic overdrive" as well as the "zakk wylde overdrive". The gt and classic are identical, but open it up and take out the pcb, flip a switch and they become the zakk. The reverse is true for the zakk.

Anyone try it next to an Xotic BB???? That is what I use now.
Problem I have is most of my amps are designed to be Fender clean on the one side and Marshall gain on the other so I have to find pedals that do both well.

Re: MXR Custom Shop GT-OD

I matched my GT-OD up with the MXR '78 Distortion, and it's a wonderful pair. I have the '78 between clean and right at clipping, with a Dyna Comp to keep things steady, and then the GT-OD to kick in some sweet drive and sustain. It is nasty for Blues. I also did that mod switch thing where you install a toggle switch on the out side to cancel having to open it up every time to play with the internal switch (If it's your choice). Peace Bro...
