MXR Didtortion + or DOD 250 users?

25's Nemesis
Hey everyone.

A quick question:

Does anyone know of any famous users of the DOD 250 (aside from Malmsteen)or MXR Distortion + pedal?

Any famous tracks to look for to give some idea of what it'll sound like through a Marshall style amp?

Thanks in advance.

Re: MXR Didtortion + or DOD 250 users?

Yngwie used the DOD, Randy Rhoads used the Dist+ and a heavy upper mids boost (with an MXR graph. EQ pedal)

Re: MXR Didtortion + or DOD 250 users?

MXR- Randy, Adrian S/Dave M through first 5-6 maiden albums. Wolf Hoffman. Gain down - level up.

Malmsteen is the only 250 user I know of.

EDIT: I think Pat Travers may have used the MXR as well back in his heyday. Not pos.

Adrian used a Tube Screamer for all the early Maiden albums, Dave was the MXR guy.

Re: MXR Didtortion + or DOD 250 users?

Back in the early 1970s, I think EVERYBODY used an MXR Distortion +. I think every guitarist in every bar-band in America had one, LOL! Personally, I didn't care for the Dist. +, and in the mid-70's I bought the DOD 250. It seemed to have a smoother sound BUT, it could be very finicky with different amps. I also noticed that with the DOD FX20 Overdrive, and several other of the DOD distortions.

And notably, my experience with the DOD pedals through Marshalls would lead me to suggest that you look elsewhere for your distorted tones.

He used both. Prior to the endorsement deal with Ibanez he used the MXR. Once he got the deal he started using the TS, as well as a Ibby chorus and analog delay. By the time the POM tour rolled around he was back to using the MXR. FWIW, you can hear the MXR on Live at the Rainbow and then on the Dortmond concert. BOH is blatant TS :laugh2:

Once PS was out, I think he was using the TS again, but I'm not positive as Pete Cornish was modding the amps, he was using a parametric and started to slowly gravitate towards the rack stuff .

One more question, are these pedals better used as boosts into an already overdriven tube amp, or are they best fed into a squeaky clean amp so that they can provide their own distortion and voicing?

YES

or are they best fed into a squeaky clean amp so that they can provide their own distortion and voicing?

Don't do this, they sound horrible used in this manner.

They were designed around goosing a good old Tube amp form the 70s prior- just like a DiMarzio Super Distortion

Re: MXR Didtortion + or DOD 250 users?

So, running one of 'em into the dirty channel of my Rivera for a lead boost would give me some cool '70's hard rock tones?

If so, I think it's time to build my own clone. ;)
