MXR Distortion III - what's it like?

I need a distortion box on my board, something with a lot more gain than my BB Preamp, but not "metal". Space is really tight, so I'm looking for pedals in a normal small-MXR-sized box. The Distortion + is way too fizzy, so that's out of the running.

Anybody played a Distortion III? How'd you like it? How's it sound??

I'm also looking at kits - GGG has a Rat clone in a small box. I like Rats.

i've got the classic distortion, which is(from what i've read) a holiday special version of the distortionIII(just repainted sold at half price, same electronics) it's a great pedal, lots of gain boost. has a good smooth crunch to it, it's very mid-rangey. with the volume and distortion turned up, it's got a nice, chewy top end to it.

If you can spare the room on your board, give the Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde a shot. I love mine, really versatile dirt pedal. Or, the smaller Son of Hyde is just the distortion channel of the J & H, without the 808 channel. This is no one trick pony, and that's what I love about it, besides the killer dirt it kicks out.

Love the Dist III . . .

. . . sounds nothing like the Dist +.

Infact, it is more of an aggro overdrive than a flat-out dist ! (to my ears)

I would rank it with my other fav overdrives in the sound quality dept :

Boss BD-2
Jaques Tube Blower

Oh, well that clinches it. I learned on the DIY amp forums that red boards sound best.
