MXR Distortion +

Re: MXR Distortion +

I don't really care for the newer ones.

I've had one several years and just don't use it ... just not really as warm and organic as some others, IMO

Re: MXR Distortion +

I agree with Curly...Aggressive and crunchy but in a bright and harsh way...Why can't anyone ever get a reissue right?

Same problems with most of the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Faces I've heard..They just lack the warmth of vintage pedals...

Re: MXR Distortion +

I don't throw out the term "hate" much...but I hate that damn pedal! :yell:

Re: MXR Distortion +

Don't have experience with the Distorition + pedal but I have another question for anyone who can answer it. What about the MXR Micro-Amp? Have anyone compared the 70's pedal with the reissue?

Re: MXR Distortion +

At one point I was using my dad's mxr distortion +, this thing is 35 years old or something. There's nothing warm or smooth about it. My jackhammer does the same thing it does only way better.

sorry, I can't compare them

my friend Pete always uses an old one on his board for a clean solo boost

I have a newer one that I'd consider using if I gigged

since it's a clean boost, as long as it does what it should, and doesn't color the sound, then you're in good shape

the newer ones are probably the best, affordable clean boost out there

+ 1 Mine is noisy, too.

I keep pedals like this one in a box that I'm saving for my son when he starts rockin' and needs a little color to his sound....he can mess with 'em, I'm sticking with my Tubescreamers and a couple of Boss modded pedals in that department.

Re: MXR Distortion +

I'm sure if the Dist. + was modded to improve what sounds like cheap components it would be a cool sounding pedal all on it's own, and small at that. But there's work needin' to be done inside those newer ones before they can be called great pedals, IMO. I'm sure Zak Wylde doesn't use a stock Dist +, just as I'm sure Jeff Beck doesn't use a newer version of the RAT pedal for his vintage tones. They want their sound pure no matter what the style is. My RAT is pretty quiet and the tones aren't bad for a RI (I've read that there are better recent years that these were made....and then there's some years that were real clunkers), but that D + was unbearably noisy and I can't believe that this is what that pedal is intended for.
I'm totally with STRATDELUXER97 (John S.) on the question of why manufacturers like Ibanez, Boss, Dunlop (MXR), Vox, etc. don't replicate the original pedals they claim they're reissuing instead of using sub-standard components that don't even come close sometimes to the originals' sounds. It's a rip-off.
The Tubescreamers I use don't mask the tone like a Dist. + does when I crank up the distortion on 'em - which I don't need to use too much of 'cause my amp has good natural distortion when in it's sweet spot. If I want a little thicker distortion than a screamer I use my modded DS-1.
If you want a better distortion pedal along the lines of a D +, go score yourself a cheap Boss DS-1 off ebay and send it to John S. for his bad-boy mods....you won't regret it. Mine's still in my rig, but that + isn't.

Re: MXR Distortion +

Everyone, my dad's distortion + is old, is stock, and is noisy, dirty, and cold sounding. It scoops out all the bass and lower mids, and you're in trouble if you aren't using an EQ to remove all the crap it adds above 10khz.
