MXR Fuzz Face Mini (Blue version) review

Hello,

A few months ago I ordered one of these and have been messing around with it here and there at home. I don't have much of a use for it in the band I'm in (r&b mainly), but I wanted to try it out anyway. I've owned a Tweak Fuzz & Big Muff, and currently own an Angry Fuzz, too. I've never owned an "original" Fuzz Face. Most of what I'm saying will probably not be new info for regular Fuzz Face users, but if you are looking for a pedalboard friendly version, this might be useful info.

So anyway...I really LIKE this little pedal. I'm starting to see why the Fuzz Face circuit is such an enduring design. What I like about it is that you basically max the knobs and then use your guitar's volume knob to control the fuzz level. You can get a variety of useable fuzz tones this way. My guitar does not have a tone control, but I now wish it did, as I can see how you could use it to tailor the fuzz tone even more.

I cannot seem to get any decent tones out of the pedal with the fuzz control set to anything less than maxed out. The tones just get buzzy and kind of weird. Maybe with a different guitar/amp the fuzz control would work better. But, as I said, using the volume on your guitar works great for varying the fuzz levels, and the tones stay...rich(?)...as opposed to buzzy.

I did some a/b tests against the Angry Fuzz (with octave off) and it seems that the AF is kind of a "refined" Fuzz Face. It gets some good fuzz face-like tones, but does not clean up with the guitar's volume. So, if you want different fuzz levels, you have to use the level knob. In a way, it's a little more sterile than the Fuzz Face. Turn the Anger knob up (octave) and of course it is a totally different beast...

I recorded some wanking with my little Tascam DR-05. Nothing special, but maybe will give a good idea of what the pedal sounds like (with vintage output humbuckers, anyway!). It's a fairly long recording (6min), so skip around.

Gear used on recording: Guitar with Duncan '59 set...Traynor Reverb Master/2x12 oversized cab loaded with Eminence Wizard/Governor combo...Fuzz Face Mini...MXR Carbon Copy. Volume was fairly loud (Volume 4, Master 2). The Traynor is a loud, clean amp.

sounds pretty fuzz facey... nice amp by the way, I lovvveee Traynors. I was thinking about getting the red version of this pedal but bought a swollen pickle instead for more versatility.. Really wanting one of these now

I'm tempted to get a red one just to compare. Fun pedal for a hundred bucks!

I have an original and I love it. I just don't have a use for it in my band, and therefore, on my board. If I ever do though I'll be picking one of these up for convenience's sake. Great demo.
