MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I just bought one from Closed Eye. Great little box. I've never played one, but I knew I liked the phaser effect.

I had no idea how much that one knob could affect the sound. From slow, swirling phase effects to tremolo type warble.

I tend to use it set at about 2 (or 8:OO for you time junkies).

I believe this pedal will be on ALOT when I play. Daddy likes.

:bigok:

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I love that phasey "Gold Dust Woman" tone so much, I just aquired a phaser myself :)

Sweet pedals, aren't they?

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I love the simplicity of the 90. One knob, one button.....sonic heaven. I wish I could find an amp that simple.

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I like 'em so much I've owned two! I actually plugged it in before I sent it off to you and sorta didn't understand why I took it off the board in the first place. Then, as I thought about it, it didn't have a depth knob...which I dig, so yeah, pass on what you can't use.

I never understood people's dislike of the reissue Phase90. I've heard "too much midrange hump" and "no character" but, eh, I don't hear it. The little orange box just sounds great. Of course, I've never actually played a script version and only have the recordings it's been on to go by, so maybe I'm missing out on something.

Joe explained the difference in the electronics between the script and the reissue(?) it to me but unfortunantly I deleted the message! Maybe he can chime in and let us know...

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

Isn't there a few mods you can do to the reissue to get it more script like?

I was thinking of getting another reissue off of Ebay just to mod it.

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

At this point, I have no desire to modify it. I really like it just as it is.

Thanks again, Brian.

There's a couple mods there and also a link on that page to another one showing the differences between the original scripts and the modern reissues.

There is a way to get the new ones to sound just like the script versions but it is major PITA and requires removal of several components and some jumpering.

If you want a script version, get the kit from Build Your Own Clone.

I've done some changes to my RI model and it sounds really sweet. I don't use it much because it sucks tone in bypass mode similar to a wah (another candidate for true bypass or adding an output buffer).

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

Just solved the tone suckage problem.

I have a buffer circuit that I had built some time ago and wasn't using, so, I put it between the output lug of the DPDT switch and the output jack tip. The trace is easily seen on the back of the board. Once the buffer was in place, I cut the PCB trace between the switch and output jack. Now, the signal goes through the buffer and the lost high end and definition is restored, both bypassed and when the phaser is in use. Sounds just how I want it to now.

*Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any failed attempts at performing such a modification. ;) :D

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I bought my Phase 90 for one reason and one reason only.....to get that old Waylon sound on songs like "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", "Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys", and "Lukenbach Texas"

Plus, countless other country stuff from the late seventies and early eighties.

Also fits right in when i play along with his son Shooter's song "Gone To Carolina"

Sonic sweetness!!

Re: MXR Phase 90 Reissue

I've got the EVH 90 phaser and I can't turn the thing off. It has a switch that toggles between Script logo (old) and Block logo and they really do sound very different. The block logo tone adds some sort of feedback loop or regeneration or something but it makes for a much harder, more pronounced phase effect. In my opinion not nearly as cool or as musical as the script sound. The script sounds if exactly like a Van Halen record, the block sound is more like a Boss phaser to my ears--not exactly bad, but very different.

The script logo models didn't have the feedback resistor (R28). That's one of the components removed when depressing that little switch. Dunlop says there's more to it, I just don't know what all it "disengages" from the block circuit. There's probably a couple of filtering caps taken out as well. If I didn't have an orange one already I'd look at getting the EVH model but I don't need it.
