MXR Prime Distortion?

They seem to be doing a larger than usual (at least, as far as I can tell) roll-out for this...lots of videos and e-mails. Anyone try one yet? I happened to swing by GC this morning, but didn't see one on display...nor did I have the time nor inclination to ask a salesperson and deal with all that that entails! Anyway, any hands-on reports yet? The videos sound pretty good. Thanks!

Re: MXR Prime Distortion?

They have them now, which is Wed evening.

I grabbed one for $50, which is a no brainer since I can return it within 30 days or sell it for what I paid later.

I have the green and cream Classic OD's, passed on the flat black Classic Distortion, but now have the flat burnt sienna orange Prime Distortion.

I'm just putting a battery in it right now, along with my cream Classic OD. I'll mess around with them for awhile, seeing if they stack together well and so forth. I don't usually use MXR dirt pedals as stand alone pedals, but as gain enhancers on an already cranked amp.

My green Classic OD is mounted to a board, so these will be floaters.

Cool, thank you GJ, let us know what you think as soon as you can!!

Re: MXR Prime Distortion?

I don't know what pedal they based it on but from the clips I've heard, it sorta sounds like the custom badass 78 distortion without the crunch button. I'm I right or is it something else.

Re: MXR Prime Distortion?

So far, I've only messed with it at low volume on my blackface Fender Pro Reverb.

It sounds pretty decent, but didn't blow me away and make me say "wow, this thing is great!"

I need to hear it on some British type amps with humbuckers, to really know where it stands. My first impression was that it sounded good but has a bit of thuddiness on the lows.....not tight and crunchy like a Bogner XTC red pedal or something.

Overall, for this type of 3 knob Distortion, my favorite is the Cmatmods Brownie. That pedal has more of the "wow" factor. But it's $130 not $50.

I'm going to run the Prime Distortion through it's paces this weekend and make a decision to keep it or get $55 store credit. I bought it knowing that GC has a 30 day return policy, and mostly wanted to see if it's a keeper or not.

On the other hand, I'm definitely keeping my Classic OD's. I really like those for boosting British amps. On American amps, I tend to go for the Green Rhino.

Re: MXR Prime Distortion?

OK, I put it through some other guitars and amps, from LP, strat, Pro Reverb, Bogner XTC blue channel in varying levels of gain.

I don't like it. It sounds like a cheap buzz box that I can't get a musical sound out of. I don't know if it's a variant of another pedal or a new thing.....don't care. I'll throw the $55 on something else.

Sounded a little fizzy on the top end to my ear.

Well, we can cross that one off the list - thanks for "taking one for the team"!
