MXR Rockman Pedal

I think we all want one. It is a great tone, iconic in every way. At $229, I question how much capturing my youth is worth and how often I will want that nostalgia. I will say one thing: They probably just killed the used market for Rockman gear.

Yeah, I'd imagine so. And actual Rockmans are a little more versatile than the pedal here. Who knows, maybe we will see a digital re-creation of the whole Rockman rack setup some day...although they should get on that quickly as those who lusted over those in the early 80s are getting older.

Satriani has kemper or tonex profile on whatever platform he was using

I saw him putting out a video about it

It may be AxeFX I'm not sure

Yeah, most high end modelers these days can model a Rockman pretty well if you can create a profile or ToneMatch with them. But I'd imagine most people with those devices aren't after Rockman rigs, but I bet they exist.

I had a chance to play a full system multiple times at a music store and the staff were very enthusiastic about how versatile it was. The EQ, distortion, and compressor could mimic many styles accessible by the midi switching.

I’m probably an outlier here but nostalgia is not the only reason I want one. The third link I posted is for a channel that does ambient post-rock kinda stuff and it was this type of demo I was actually most interested in. I wanted to see if the pedal could be used in ways other than just playing Def Leppard riffs. I found the results encouraging. I’m more excited than ever for getting one now. :)

Remember anything about it? It might have sounded amazing at the time, but my guess is that, like a lot of rack effects then, they don't sound that great now.

Yes, nostalgia is the #1 reason people will buy this, but I think if they would have come out with it 25 years ago, they would have sold more.

I own the XP100 (the one depicted above the Rockmodules in the picture above) and a very modest Rockmodule setup. They sound good, but what really makes them flexible is the post-preamp EQ. The XP100 is far more limited in this regard, since it is an all-in-one box, and thus also has more of the Rockman sound.

The headphone amp was a full on modeler

The guy from Dunlop talking at NAMM to the Andertons folks said straight into a board
he said any amp would color it a bit

Effects return or PA
Straight to DAW

I think that most people who ran it into an amp for distortion used one of the Rockmodules, either the Sustainor or the Distortion Generator, rather than this. There was a rackmount unit for the headphone amp that added a footswitch, but I think most people either used that as a standalone rig or as an extra clean channel alongside a Marshall or something.

Unless you are in a Def Leppard tribute band, this sound is of little use. I

*Ahem*

I could use that pedal for like 1/3 of our set.

That said, I have no trouble generating Hysteria tone with pretty much every amp/pedal combo I have.
- Cube 30: 5150, Chorus, Delay
- Mesa Stiletto: Tight Gain, CHorus, Delay, Reverb from Zoom G3N (Literally a patch called Hysteria)
- POD Go comes with a press for Deaf Cat or something
- Marshall VS100: OD2 + Delay & chorus du Jour

I'd be into that pedal if it had a version with echo on it, instead of just chorus. The C1 C2 Edge Distortion and Chorus echo ones were able to craft some nice non-Boston sounds.

I know the original Rockman had Clean 1 and Clean 2. What was the difference? I hadn't used one for years.

Clean 2 is a more basic clean, whereas clean 1 has some sort of EQ applied to it to work as a hyper-clean guitar tone. I find that it has more top-end sheen.

Is the pedal a full-on amp modeler, or is it a regular effect pedal? I didn't read that much into it.

I feel like MXR is failing a little bit in regards to making this clear. If this pedal is designed to use as a DI box like the original Rockman, their info on the website doesn’t say so. In fact, it even mentions “going to your amplifier”. I predict a lot of confusion stemming from this.
