My 1987x is a keeper.

As I posted before, I got a 1987x modded by David Bray. Well I put it through ringer last night and it sounds KILLER! I've never played a better amp period. No FX in the loop and nothing up front. Guitar straight in. Its so much tighter than my JMP and the notes just SING. I had it plugged into a Mesa 4X12 w/v30's. I'll be plugging it in my Marshall 4X12 w/v30's and G12H-30's with my pedal board next practice to hear the difference.
I'll be screwing with the V1 and the powertubes to find which sound best but other than that, it just smokes everything else I've played.

I think I'm going to try a Bugle boy in V1 and put the Shuguangs back in. I tried it with the Svets last night.

I was actually listening to the clips on bray's site earlier today. Nice, nice, nice stuff!

Part of me was thinking about selling the Marshall I built (of course, it isnt even complete yet but still...) and using that cash and some extra for a Bogner. And as much as I'd love a Bogner, there's something about a modded Marshall BALLS-OUT and cranked to the freakin' max that you gotta love! Of course, I have yet to play an extacy so my opinion may change!

Ahh hell.. I'll just get both.

Killer amp. I'm really curious as to what Bray's mods entail. I always love seeing new mods, not so much new in concept, but new "packages" so to speak. Most anything you could do to a single channel Marshall is well documented, but its kind of like a Linux distro: what comes in the package is always different! One guy chooses to add a switch for different Cathode bypass caps, while another guy chooses something else he deems more important to add.

I cant wait to get my Marshall up and running so I can mess with it!

Ah yes, the mighty XTC. Thats always been the boutique amp that I've been gasing for too. I've always had Marshalls, 7 of them to be exact. The only amp I ever bought that wasn't is a Fender Blues JR.
I will probably get a Bogner though one of these days for a different sound too.

Re: My 1987x is a keeper.

I really need to get my metroamp plexi up and running. I got the 100 watt kit, but followed the 68 wiring layout diagram. Once I get that baby up and running, I hope to put together a collection of mods to call my own. I've already got a few plans, following my own ideas and some insights by Kevin O'Connor in his books. I really want to put in a footswitch in there for a clean/driven sound... and probably lower the B+ to brown it out a bit. I also want to put in a cathode cap switch, and scale the amp to touch Soldano territory WITHOUT adding an extra preamp tube.

Ahhh such dreams. First if I can get the bacon frying sound out :smack:!
