My 1st Esquire build

Re: My 1st Esquire build

the white one looks like itll be cool

Thanks everyone

Had to make an Esquire that looked nothing like the first one.

I called Warmoth up, and asked the sales guy, is there anything I should know about this one? Because sometimes there're things I'm not sharp enough to pick up on. So he went and got the body, & said something like "The only thing you need to know about this body is....... that it looks really amazing!"

If nothing goes wrong, I should have it late this week, or early next week.

I wonder if I could have gotten it overnighted. I hate waiting, even if I drag my feet about putting things together.

*sigh* ... I hate waiting too. And it's gonna be next year before I can even get the body and neck for mine. At least most of the hardware is already purchased.

That's a nice looking body. I've thought about doing the binding myself. Would have to be front only because I'll have the gut cut on it.

There's a a guy on the TDPRI Tele forum that did a thread showing how binding is done. I think it was Buckocaster51. He's done quite a few double bound Tele bodies, and I'm always amazed at the guy's craftsmanship. jwells393 over there does some amazing things too. And a lot of these guys start from body blanks too, so they're really starting from scratch. Rich Rice's work humbles me too.

I just bolt them together, and sometimes carve out a humbucker spot. Don't even want to do the finish anymore.

Well, I wouldn't be doing the finish and binding myself as in me doing it. I meant it as in "me too"...LOL. I simply don't have the patience to do binding if I finish it myself. The way I figure it, if I paint it myself, no binding. If I have Warmoth do it, then I'll get the binding. Double bound looks great but I want that gut cut so it would have to be front only.

Those bound bodies seem to run about $100 more than the unbound ones. So usually when I search the bodies in the Showcase section, I search for ones with a finish, without binding, and no laminated top.

But I was about to have a bunch of parts, without a body to use them on! So I broadened my search a bit.

I don't have the gut cut on any Telecasters. I don't particularly notice it, but my Les Paul Junior/Special has a gut cut, and it's ideal for sitting back and playing unplugged while I watch TV. I'm usually standing when I play though.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

This just showed up today. I tried it with a black Bakelite pickguard, but I think I like this black pearloid one better. It gives it a little more dimension.

I've got a 21fret rosewood fingerboard Warmoth neck coming. I was expecting them to send me a shipping notice by now! I'm pretty sure that the one I ordered is a boat contour. Something a lot fatter than what I'm used to.

This body is very white!

Re: My 1st Esquire build

You're going to love the boat contour if you have big hands. It is such a comfortable profile. One of my necks has that contour and I plan on getting that same one for my Esquire build. Black pearloid for sure. That looks sweet!

My hands aren't that big, but a lot of people with small hands claim that fat necks are more comfortable, and that they improve a Tele's sound. So I figured I'd give it a try. V necks seem like they sound better, and this is a lot chunkier.

Warmoth says they're 1" thick from the 1st fret thru (where ever). I think that's thicker than anything I own.

I don't play with my thumb on the back of the neck anyhow.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

Yup, it's 1" thick the entire length of the neck. Bar none, the most comfortable neck I have on any of my guitars. Just be ready for others to refer to the guitar as a cricket paddle...LOL. Mine has been called a baseball bat at times. :)

I usually refer to the neck on that '57 Goldtop RI I played once as a telephone poll. I wonder how thick that was. It was a big fat, round neck. If I had the money to buy one, I probably would have gotten used to the neck because the thing sounded great!

Re: My 1st Esquire build

I finally got an email with the shipping info yesterday. My guess is that it got delayed by the holiday.

I should probably start getting things ready with the body.

I always have to remove some paint from the jack hole to get a jack cup to fit. And I'll have to cut a slot for the truss rod adjustment because I'm using the old type of neck. All sorts of pesty things I'd rather think about than actually do them.

This is the clearest picture I was able to grab from the Showcase pics. The view from the front isn't as clear, but it's a rosewood fingerboard this time.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

Told ya you'd like it. ;) That's a beautiful piece of maple on that thing.

Yeah, I was expecting 1" thick to feel a lot thicker. I don't think it'll be a problem at all. I have thinner necks that feel thicker than this.

The grain's very 3D. The stripes move around as you change your angle.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

My Glendale bridge parts showed up yesterday, so I have to start working on my 2nd Esquire again

GlendaleParts.jpg

The saddles come with a couple spare set screws, which might be handy if I don't lose them. This bridgeplate comes with slotted screws like the Blackguards used.

This bridgeplate is made of cold rolled steel.

So're the saddles.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

cool. nice looking bridge, but i gotta say i hate the slot screws. i know they are vintage correct and all that crap but they are a pita. nice looking bridges!

kinda weird that the callaham bridge is significantly thicker .075 vs .048
and callaham uses 1018 steel vs 430 steel

id love to a/b them and see what the differences are

Thanks. Yeah I'm not real big on slotted screws. I might use the phillips screws that came with a Gotoh humbucker Tele bridge I'm not using right now.

I don't know why Gendale uses this thickness. His Stainless Steel bridges seem to be .048 too.

I have a real shortage of Fender cases. I was eyeballing his "Thermometer Cases" http://www.glendaleguitars.com/cases.htm

I always kind of wanted a case like that for a Tele. I wonder if it'll fit a Strat though.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

im pretty sure it will. that is a sweet looking case. $260 is a little steep but not outta line with some other high end cases

i think the .048 is around what fender used on the old ones and im sure there is a different tone between the thin and thick, im just curious what the differences are.

Re: My 1st Esquire build

Just when I thought I got over this one, here it is again....LOL. I'm actually going to go with one of those Gotoh humbucker Tele bridges for mine. After I get that and the pickguard, I'll have all the hardware.

How soon before you have it completed?
