My 70's era pedals

My MXR pedals from the mid/late 70's. At least I think most are -- some recollections are hazy from those years, heh.

The cool green one is MXR's original bucket brigade analog delay. It's VERY low-fi, and very short on delay time (less than 400ms I think). Serial # 18 - 005893

The flanger still sounds pretty nice, although has a bit of hum from the ac supply. I occasionally still use this, I should recap it probably. Serial # 17 - 021075

The distortion+ I think was my first pedal ever. Serial # 4 - 077249

The dyna comp is still on my pedal board... I just recently refurbished it, adding true bypass, a blue Led, and 9v power jack. Still sounds great. Serial # 2 - 026132

I also have an old 70's Morley Fuzz/Wah in the garage somewhere, didn't feel like rooting around for it.

Post pics of your 70's / 80's pedals!

Re: My 70's era pedals

Those MXR echo units are KILLER...IM thinking they are around 300ms or less but what a cool tone. Low fi and dark repeats for sure but nice. A thick and gooey delay if there ever was one!

I had one years ago and like a dumb ass I traded it for an original Foxx Foot phaser...that I then traded for a bunch of Boss boxes that I thought I needed at the time!

Oh well..live and learn!

Nice collestion of stuff there.

Yeah I still kick myself for selling off an old 70's Fender Bassman head... I REALLY wish I had kept that.

Re: My 70's era pedals

I'm drooling over my monitor. The delay is fantastic! I wonder what one of those goes for now?

Re: My 70's era pedals

I love the delay pedal. I have the stereo chorus of the same era. Looks the same, only yellow.

Re: My 70's era pedals

They have actually dropped in price over the past year or so...at one point they were $350+ but recently they have to be CLEAN to break $200 and in the original box to break $250...

I still have the original box, oddly enough... it has the price tag on it that I originally paid: normal price was $359.95, I got it on sale for $275 back in the 70's.
Also have the flanger box: that tag says $199.95

I use both boxes to store spare electronic parts, which is why I still have them. :approve:

Re: My 70's era pedals

I have a micro amp that would go really well with those! Nice boxes!!!

Re: My 70's era pedals

Not mine but dad has a script phase 100 not my favourite phase tone (not swirly and dreamy enough for me) but a nice pedal nevertheless

Re: My 70's era pedals

I think most of the analog delays on the market back then didn't do more than 300 or 330 ms of delay. I remember thinking that was never long enough for me either. Then later when digital delays were available, I started to appreciate short delay. Too long a delay can clutter things up, especially with a few repeats.

Here are some shots of my 70's pedals.

The Morely is a power wah boost. None of these pedals get used much. The Boss Touch Wah may have missed the 70's by a few years.

The Mu Tron wah volume pedal still gets gigged. It's built like a tank. No issues with it in 30 years. The TC pedal is probably actually as 80's as Cindy Lauper and Men Without Hats.

I have a broken Morely power wah down in the basement too. I came across it in the attic at my parents house a month ago. I only vaguely remember someone at some time giving it to me - "it's yours if you can fix it" - but I can't even remember who or when it was anymore.

Re: My 70's era pedals

My brother told me he went out to see a local band Saturday, and one of the pedals on the guitarist's pedal board was a Meastro phaser. He asked the guitarist about it because he'd never seen one before. The guitarist claimed he found it in someone's barn! It had hay on it when he found it! Now it's back in action getting gigged every weekend.

Re: My 70's era pedals

I had that MXR Flanger. I really liked it. I was in Jazz band in High school and my band teacher never let me use the flanger because it would trip the circuit breaker,

My Dad gave me a 70's MXR 5 band EQ and an MXR Micro flanger and some cheap overdrive pedal I can't remember the name of. I sold them all when I was hard up for money when I was 20, what a dumbass I was.

I guess if I was willing to spend the money I could get the micro flanger again but I probably wouldn't use it much since I love my EH Electric Mistress.....

Re: My 70's era pedals

I have a distortion + that looks like that but only a bit more worn with one different knob on it etc and though it's nice and suprisingly smooth given the eq, I just haven't gelled with it. Neat pedal and good sound, but not my bag. Those pedals from that era really had something special about them though. That delay looks really neat sho nuff. I'll bet it runs a pretty penny now on ebay etc to bag one of those.

Re: My 70's era pedals

By the way - the Dyna Comp has a light. You sure that's 70's vintage?

Yep, I added the blue led, and a true bypass switch, and a 9v jack to it just a few weekends ago. All the gray foam material inside of it (MXR mounted their pc boards in some pedals by wrapping them in gray foam) had deteriorated to a yucky mess, which I had to clean up.

The Maestro Phaser was my first pedal. I was stationed in Germany (Army), and bought it probably in 1979. Wish I still had it!
