My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

I got my brand new EVH 5150 III 50 watt head about a month ago. Getting great tones out of it. But I got this hi gain amp cause from what I have read on reviews and forums with people who had, that it was a pretty quiet amp for hi gain. Mine just seems overly noisey. Even on the clean channel. Can someone tell me why? I'm using live wire advantage guitar cables and the speaker cable that came with the head when I got it. I'm playing a bedroom volumes and I don't have my gain passed 1:00 on any of my channels.

What kind of guitar are you using? Single coils? Is this something you didn't experience with an earlier setup? Preamp tube issue maybe?

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Are you running the amp on the same power strip as any other devices? Particularly florescent lights? (in general, is the noise floor the same when you use it somewhere else, preferably a different building.)

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

I'm using an Arbor Les Paul copy. With Humbuckers. I had a Mesa Dual Rectifier before this head thru the same cab and had absolutely NO noise. Also real noisey when I roll my guitars volume all the way down. It's just not appealing. If it is a preamp tube issue. What do you reccommend I do?

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Easy way to test, take a known good tube and swap it out for your preamp tubes one at a time. If the noise goes away or reduces then you've found a bad tube, if it doesn't then you know you have another problem.

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

I'm using the same surge protector as my alarm clock. I wonder if my alarm clock could be causing a problem? Alright I'll have to get my had on some tubes then and test them out. Should I get some new tubes of the same brand or another brand? (This is my second tube amp and not too fancy on all the tubes out there. But I did like the preamp tubes that were used on my Mesa DR though... Could I use those In this EVH?)

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Preamp tubes are all interchangeable. If you don't have extra tubes you can even try swapping the position of the tubes to see if that does anything.

Hmmmmm ok then. I'll give that a shot.
Another noob question: I don't have to bias anything when switch preamp tubes right?

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Nope, not at all. actually you usually don't even have to rebias power tubes if you replace them with the exact same kind and rating as long as they are from one of the really consistent companies (groove tubes or mesa for example)

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Does the noise increase as you hike the volume ?

Yes it does! Especially on ch.3! I'll have my volume on my guitar off, and if I turn the volume knob up, it's just gets nasty. And it's real noticeable when I'm only at 9:00 on the volume.

I'll post a video to show you what I talking about.

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

I have taken one preamp tube out at a time and switching it with one Mesa SPax7 tube I had. If no noise was reduced, I would take out the Mesa tube and put the original tube back in. As of right now, I have the Mesa Tube in the V6 spot, and it took out the noise/hum out of my ch.1 (clean channel) whic I had noise In that channel before. And noticeable difference on my ch.2 (dirty channel) it is now a bit quieter, but with some noise. But my channel 3 (hi gain channel) is still very noisey. Which "V" spot is associated more with this channel? (V1,V2,V3..etc?) my EVH has 9 "V" spots. But V7 and V8 are 6L6GC power tubes.

Re: My Amp Soufs TOO NOISY

Does your amp have a channel and master volume?

Try turning down the Channel volume if you got one.
