My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Grrr ... damned tempting

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

God bless you then - I am going with the same exact finish for my home build --- no grain filler (I like the textured "faded" style finish too!) and finished in white.

So I will be tuned in very closely - thanks for going first!

Hahaha. Thanks for keeping up with this. Only one coat of the sanding sealer was needed too. You can still feel the grooves of the grain a little but that is part of the faded feel. Once I get the paint on, it'll be even smoother than it is now from filling it in just a little more. It's pretty dang smooth as is just from sanding it back. It felt like 2 day stubble from not shaving before I sanded it.

I may leave mine intentionally rougher. My slab is already pretty smooth with 0 sanding - no natural "sandpaper" feel, either against the grain or with it (or across it).

I want mine to feel like wood. Apparently pretty hard to cop, if you want the slab to be sealed against moisture.

Here's a few pics with the hardware and strings mounted.

I came home today and it was still in tune (as good as can be without a setup). Everything looks good.

These were taken with a different camera. My wife has the one I used for the other pics.

Aside from paint, I need to file down the nut, give it a complete setup, get the bridge inserts in permanently (don't forget the earth wire....lol), get the truss rod cover cut to fit and make a backplate.

The weather looks to be cooling down next week but it still looks like early September before I can spray. I can at least work on a few other things in the meantime.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Looks awesome Bro! I so cannot wait to see the completed project

what size frets are on that thing???

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Thanks, Dude. There will be plenty of pics when it is finished.

The frets are Jescar wire, medium jumbo (6130). They feel real nice. I may have the edges rounded a little more. Will know for sure once it is complete, set up and I have time to play it for a while.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

That looks so awesome, I'd wanna leave it natural.

You may have said this already elsewhere in the thread, but since theres no top-routing for the electronics are you gonna still put a pickguard on? (I would, its not an SG without a pickguard as far as I'm concerned)

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Yes, a teardrop pickguard is going on. Just waiting for a reply from one source before I decide on where to get it from.

Awesome , did you decide on a pickup? Sorry , to lazy to read all the other posts

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Thanks all. I love how it's coming together.

Yes, I have decided on a pickup..... Lollar Dog Ear P-90 5% overwind tapped at the output level close to the 50's wind.

I took a giant step backwards ... it's not a pretty picture. I decided the paint would have been too thick under the bridge so I sanded that area down to the original finish. My dust coat of the sanded area was too white. I had a blend I was perfectly happy with and I've got to get it back. It looks like pure crap right now ... and for the first time ever I got some trash in the paint. I was leaning on a brick wall, and when I pushed back some fine brick dust dropped into the finish.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Between this build and the SG preliminaries thread I'm starting to gas for an SG. Great.

Looks killer, though!

Dude, that sucks. Take a step back, think it through, then move forward.

Thanks. SG's are a lot of fun. They look cool too. I'm a Strat guy at heart but SG's are a really close second. I love the upper fret access, and the tone is great.

looking damn good so far, curious to see where you put the strap buttons...

Thanks. Well, the bottom one is in the usual spot. The top one is on the back at the heel like typical on SG's but at the 21st fret rather than the 20th due to the difference in the neck heel of the kit. Still balances great.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Yep just sent Phil an email enquiring about some custom changes but I do think I'll follow you down the rabbit hole.
