My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

I have paint.... but it's still too flippin hot to spray. 41 of the last 42 days 100+ degrees Fahrenheit, 40 of them in a row. Now that's HOT!

I picked up 2 spray cans of Duplicolor Perfect Match acrylic lacquer, Oxford White. The plan is to put them in warm water, spray one for a little and when I feel the can get cold, switch to the other can. I'll be sure they are, in fact, a perfect match before doing so.

There's lots of little things to take care in the meantime. Once it cools down, it's time to spray.

You keep saying how its too hot to paint...and it just makes me want to do one of these even more. Because I would want to paint it in completely unfavorable conditions, with the goal of it turning out as such-

If that is to happen to mine, then it'll be from years of playing it, which is exactly how that one got the way it is.

It's so hot the paint will be dry as soon as it hits the wood. This is the hottest summer I have ever experienced.

On the last coat I spayed from a can, Erik, I was was trying to lay down a medium wet coat and the finish dried on the guitar with some pretty serious porosity. I think the surface of the new coat was skinning over while solvent was trying to escape. Now I get to sand some more.

Nah I'm fairly certain it didn't get that way from just playing. I believe the whole guitar was made in like 2 weeks and the finish never got the proper time to cure. Then it went from the UK to South America on tour, where it was left in a hot car under the sun all day, and the finish bubbled up and chipped away.

Exactly why I'm waiting for the temps to come down. Today is going to be 87 for a high but we have plans and I still need to remove the hardware and prep the wood with PrepSol, something I need to get and not going to rush through.

Looking forward to seeing yours completed.

I see. Fortunately I can give mine the proper cure time, but I'm also not using nitro either.

By the sounds of your prevailing weather conditions, the trick is probably going to be to have the guitar and painting gear all in the same place, at the same temperature. Spray the guitar and leave it in the same place for a while. In other words, everything stays at the same temperature until the paint has had at least an hour or two to flash off and begin to cure. Paint and job being at different temperatures can cause problems, as can moving the freshly-sprayed job from one temperature environment to another.

It's ironic that you have too much heat ... my LP build has been the opposite, i had to spray in the middle of winter, scouring the weather forecasts for the right days that would have acceptable temperatures without too much humidity. Normally excessive heat isn't a great problem for me as i use a compressor and spray guns so i can adjust the paint/thinners ratios to suit, and use retarders if necessary, but of course rattle cans don't allow for such adjustments, so it becomes more about prevailing conditions.

I suppose ideally it comes down to timing when to start a project, but circumstances often dictate that it is impossible to know how long a build is going to take, so it can still be a crap-shoot trying to reach the finishing stage to coincide with suitable weather conditions. Unless of course you have friends in the auto-finishing industry who might let you use their facilities.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

That's the trick, Neil. I would really like to be able to just throw some tarps down in my work room and have at it in there but the wife is concerned about fumes escaping to the rest of the house. It's not a big room and I don't really have anything to hang it from. If I can come up with something to hang it from, or lay it on a table, I can probably get away with it. Would take some convincing.

I do have an air compressor but no painting tools to use with it and zero skill with air brushing. It's mostly for airing up tires, blowing crap out of the garage, blowing out the AC unit, just general use.

What I like about this build and what is sort of keeping me in check is that I'm acquiring what is needed in stages. It makes me stay focused on that one stage before moving on to the next one. Once I got the hardware on for the dry fit, that's when I remembered..... oh yeah, I need to get the nut done, the backplate, truss rod cover, etc...lol. There's no rushing.

I think Yoda would be proud...LOL.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

FINALLY ordered the pickup and a pickguard.

For the pickup, I called Lollar and got a 5% overwind tapped at the output close to the 50's wind. This is per Jason's recommendation that would give me the most noticeable difference.

For the pickguard, I snapped one up from eBay. It was one of two sources I could track down and I hadn't heard a word from one of them in over a week so I went with the other one.

Still no change in the weather. Saturday was a high of 87 but we were out enjoying and back to over 100 again yesterday and for the next week and more it looks like. No biggie. Gonna work on other stuff.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

WOOHOO! Just got a UPS notification that the P-90 from Lollar is shipping today. Should see it early next week. And, it looks like there will be enough of a cool down in the evenings and early mornings this weekend that I might be able to spray a coat or two. We'll see.

That guitar is basically the Excaliber of Metal- along with his SG with the Rat sticker on it. There's no guitar more evil visually or sonically than that guitar.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Nice to see my own thread documenting a build has been hijacked by an Iommi SG. Thanks. Much appreciated.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

wow, this is looking great! i think you're pretty brave to try a set neck. I've always been too nervous that one of mine would be too far off to play. How did you get it straight, measure it 417 times and cross your fingers?

Haha. Thanks. The pocket and neck tenon are cut and routed so they just drop in and that's it. There's virtually no room for the neck to move in either direction. All I had to do was make sure it was clamped down good during the glue drying period.

It looks like Mother Nature is going to bestow us with some cooler weather this Labor Day Weekend. I plan on taking advantage of it to get a couple of coats laid down. I have one coat on now and may be able to get another one on before it gets too warm.

Only a couple of small run spots and a little orange peel in a couple small areas but nothing too serious. Can be easily taken care of with a little sanding.

During the last month, the pickup was ordered (a Lollar tapped P-90), remaining bits of hardware, and the nut was installed. There are still many little things to deal with but the light appears at the end of the tunnel. My patience is definitely being tested with this project. So far, so good.

Updated pics to come later today.

Stay calm, breathe deep. The finished product will be a direct reflection of how you handle things. Of course i'm hoping it goes well, but if things don't quite go to plan and it needs a little more time, then so be it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. Have you decided how long you're going to allow the finish to cure and harden ?

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Here are a couple pics from today's painting session. It's coming out quite well. The faded look is going to look great on this. The grain is still visible but is getting filled in just enough by the paint. After some light sanding tonight, I'll throw on another couple coats tomorrow morning and then let it sit for a week or two before putting all the hardware on.

I still need to drill the holes for the pickguard screws, the pickup mount screws, truss rod cover screw and the backplate cover screws. While it cures completely, I can work on shaping the backplate cover and implementing a slide switch in to use with the tapped P-90 (thanks to crusty for the idea).

On to the pics. As always, there are more pics on my site: http://www.erikhansen.net/pgksgjr.php
