My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

It looks great. Is the black headstock face going to have the slightly porous look too, or are you going for a Gibson-style glassy smooth finish there ?

It's going to have the faded look too. The Gibson headstock face is an overlay, something I don't have, so just straight black matching the finish style of the rest of the guitar works for me. It looks cool actually.

Pickup arrives today instead of yesterday due to the extended weekend so there is a chance it'll be put together completely tonight. Then I get to work on mounting the switch to the back plate for switching the pickup between hot and vintage modes. :)

Thanks, T4D.

It is done and it sounds WONDERFUL! It plays AMAZING! I ran in to a couple snags near the end but was able to get through them easily enough.

Pics to come later. Haven't had a chance the last couple days to get time before sundown.

Congrats Erik! I was and still am itching hard for a LP Jr DC kit from them... you're really not helping me!

Hehehehe. Just wait until the pics are posted. ;)

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Great news !! Did you get the coil-tap switch working ?

How's the playability factor ?

How's the TONE ???

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

The tap switch isn't in place yet but will be probably tonight. I had to think how I was going to make the slot in the back plate for it.

Playability is great. Doesn't matter if the action is high or low, it plays real nice. Very comfortable and balances just as good as my Gibson SG Classic does - no neck dive.

The tone? OMG, the tone. The Lollar is just what the doctor ordered for this one. It's absolutely fantastic. Big, thick, snarly, yet clear. Roll the volume back and it cleans right up. I couldn't have asked for it to sound any better right off the bat.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Finally was able to get some pics of the finished product. I tell ya what, this is one sweet playing guitar. I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. I'm still messing with the setup but am pretty close to having it dialed in.

The P-90 tapped sounds really good. It still has that big, fat and snarly tone but just lower output. That said, I was able to get the switch mounted in the back plate for switching between modes. I'm not one to really switch during a song so having the switch there rather than a push/pull works great for me.

The overall playability is great, sustain is great, balance is great (like my SG Classic). It's been a real learning experience doing this. Been too long since I last assembled a guitar like this. It was worth it and then some.

I have to thank Neil (crusty) for the invaluable info he shared with me via PM during this process. It helped immensely.

On to the pics. (the entire process can be seen on my site; http://www.erikhansen.net/pgksgjr.php).

Very awesome!!! Just the inspiration I needed to go out and start working on mine!

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Wow, cool ! That came out great.

Nice job on the 'secret switch', too.

I bet that puts a big smile on your face when you play it.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Thanks, guys. I just got done playing it at a desirable volume for a bit with the current setup and I must say, I don't think I'm going to change anything. The action is just right, neck is straight, intonation is on. It plays fantastic. One thing I do plan on doing in the near future is trimming the switch lever to be flush with the back plate. It rubs my leg a bit and on top of that, it can both get annoying and switch it accidentally. It didn't switch at all today but it could happen. Once trimmed, I'll file a notch in it so it can be switched with the tip of a pick.

Thanks. I was looking at a pic of an original '61 and then a pic of mine in the same pose. It put a smile on my face. Hit exactly on the mark as to what I was going for..... the look, but modernized here and there.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

Can i suggest that if you are going to shorten the actuator lever of the switch, don't do it by holding the body of the switch while cutting the actuator..... those switches are lightly-built. Somehow you need to hold the lever and cut it so there's no stress on the switch assembly. OR you could dismantle the switch first.

I would hold it down and cut it with a very sharp blade rather than trying to saw or file it. Then use the edge of a file to create two or three grooves across the top to create some 'grip'.

Good idea. I could put some duct tape around it to hold it together as well. These do come apart easily. I have one that I messed up already....lol. Might just practice on that one.

Re: My attempt at a set neck build - Precision SG Jr.

You were not kidding Bro! That turned out awesome! Wow.

Only thing that would bother me is the vol/tone being so far away! Yikes. Did it come pre-drilled like that? (I'm too lazy to click on page 1, lol).

We need some clips! Through the MKIII DMV please :bigthumb:

Thanks, Bro. You'd fall in love with it if you played it.

The controls came drilled like that. That's how the originals are. doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I knew you were gonna ask for clips...lol. Once I can, I will be recording some, through both the MkIII and the Valvetronix.
