My bands third demo if anyones interested...

Re: My bands third demo if anyones interested...

My thought's on the mix are that you should have the bass, drums and vocals dominate and the guitars back a bit. It's all guitars right now. Start with the drums at about -6dbs for the entire kit then bring in the bass to sit well then the vocals so we can understand you then the guitars.

My 2 cents.

K, kool...I'll work it a bit...I actually did pretty much just that when Mixing, the original mix was way way too guitar heavy...so I took everythingback to zero and started with the drums, then brought in the bass, and Organ...then Vocals...once that all sounded good to me, then I brought the guitars back in...Apparently I still ****ed it up though, haha.
I think the multi-band compression I used on the master channel might have brought the guitars up too much, but I dunno I think it brought the bass up alot more than anything else, maybe I just messed it up haha...Do you think I should do the mix with the Master Channel Comp. engaged? Or, ya know, any tips to get this sounding its best?

Re: My bands third demo if anyones interested...

I use an SSL comp on the master, try a regular compressor with a 2:1 ratio and a threshold of -4.5 dbs. You don't want a lot just a bit.

Do you have good monitors?

Re: My bands third demo if anyones interested...

Jesus Christ, man. That's ****ing incredible.

I know I've told you before that I'm really into your band and I'm not trying to kiss your ass or anything, seriously. It just clicks with me more than anything else I've heard in a really long, long time. Truthfully, that's one of those songs I really wish I'd written.

The mix is pretty good and I like that the guitars have a good powerful attack. I'd bring the bass and maybe the drums up a bit but that's about it.

Good work, dude. Keep it up. :beerchug:

K, kool...I tried to do what you were saying, Brought the Drums Vocals and Bass higher in the mix, and tried the comp settings you suggested...so Hopefully its brought everything together better.

I actually don't have monitors at all...haha...I just run the audio output into one of two stereos (high end stereos though), depending on where I am in the house...and then once I think I have a decent mix I burn a cd and listen to in the car and both stereos just to make sure. I'm poor, haha...So my recording equipment is very minimal and ****ty anymore...

like you said, it's definitely a good bowie/cure/rock mix. kinda like if bowie and the cure started a new rock band in the early 90s. sounds great! honestly though, you could still bring the guitars back down a few db. otherwise i luuurrrrv it:)

Thanks for the link, I'll keep those in mind when I actually have money.

Mr. Low,

Please turn up the vocals so I can understand what you're trying to tell me and turn down the guitars...still. :) In all seriousness I know you're working with a handicap not having monitors so try and A/B your mix while you're working on it with other pro recordings. And, don't be so self-conscious about the vocals they are what will sell the song not the guitars.

Yeah man...I have been A/Bing it with pro recordings, that I like...And on every stereo I've listened to it on, this last mix sounds really good to me, and everyone else I've asked (mostly non-musicians that are more focused on vocals than music, like the average person). If the vocals were any louder, it'd sound like it was mixed by someone wanting to make Pop records. Everyone else I've talked to agree's that the vocals are at a good level now. Did you listen to the last mix I uploaded? Maybe it just doesn't sound right on computer speakers? I think it sounds ****ty on lap top speakers, but I think all music sounds ****ty on laptop speakers. haha.
At this point I'm not that I'm self conscious of my voice really...After getting lots of compliments lately, I don't feel like a retard for sounding like I do, not most the time at least.
I think maybe what I think of as good sounding Pro-mixes, might not be the same as what your thinking of? I've been a/bing stuff with Mellon Collie Pumpkins, Downward NIN, Anti-Christ Manson, Disintegration Cure, and Hunky Dory Bowie...I'm not trying to do that ultra modern "All I can hear is Vocals and drums" sound. Just trying to make it sound good for anyone listening to it, but still sound decent to me. If that makes sense...

But...Feel free to offer to do my mixing for me, haha. I'd be more than happy to let anyone that can get better results do this stuff for me. haha. Mixing is my least favorite part of the whole process.

Re: My bands third demo if anyones interested...

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM: Im listening to my 80$ studio monitors. I figure someone else will say it sounds great right after this post, but dude your vocals have some sort of filter/phaser/distortion on em that muddles the mix up when the distorted guitars guitars kick in for the chorus VOCALS part. the snare needs compression and eq. pretty repetitive song so it helps if you can tell what the singer is singing.

Re: My bands third demo if anyones interested...

I'm listening through a 50 dollar set of Altec Lansing computer speakers. From a casual listener's standpoint, I'd like to hear the vocals louder during the big chorus part.

Really dig the guitar in the pre-chorus.

I know this isn't the comparison you are probably looking for, but the vocals in the chorus sound like if Scott Weiland was abused by his father as a youth. And I mean that in a good way! It's like Scott Weiland's voice mixed with Jonathan Davis from early Korn's aggression. I really dig it. Someone commented that the song is repetitive but I dig songs like that... shows you have confidence in the riffs being catchy and the vocalist being able to add in the necessary variety. Besides, Led Zep is incredibly repetitive sounding to me and they made a ton of bank.

Awesome songs, bring 'dem vocals up!

Big Muff for the big guitar choruses?
