My clean channel has a faint distorted tone in the back ground.

Today is the first I have heard it. But when I play on the clean channel there is a very faint distorted tone coming through behind the clean. It matches the clean perfect note for note. It's about as loud as a whisper but you can make it out pretty good. What should I look at first? Tubes seem fine cables are good as is my guitar.

Re: My clean channel has a faint distorted tone in the back ground.

What make and model is the amplifier? What valve types are in it? How are they mounted within the amplifier? How old are they? When was the amplifier last re-biased?

All manner of components could be resonating or contributing unwanted signals.

Yeah, it really does sound like a tube issue? I mean it could be something else but it sounds exactly like a microphonic problem....

Re: My clean channel has a faint distorted tone in the back ground.

I'm guessing it's a multichannel amp, being as you specified "clean channel"....without knowin exactly what amp it is, kinda hard to make any guesses at what it is (beyond the obvious tube issues)....but I will say, I've had two different multichannel amps that had an issue like that at one point. Once was a peavey triple X. The other was a Red knob Fender (can't remember the exact model, 60watts 112). On the clean channels I could almost always hear a very very faint distorted signal in the background. Same thing as you've said, a perfect note for note double of the clean signal, just super quiet and distorted. I tried tons of things to get rid of it the first time it happened (on the triple x), tube swaps, checking for faulty components, etc etc etc. Until eventually I thought "maybe the dirt channel is just bleeding over onto the clean channel for some reason?" So I turned all the knobs on the dirt channel to zero. Everything volume gain eq etc.
And the problem disappeared. No distorted whisper in the back ground. Same thing worked with the red knob fender too. And I've encountered the same problem on lots of other multichannel amps. And the same thing almost always works to get rid of it. The down side is, it sort of defeats the purpose of having a multichannel amp. Haha.
I only use vintage fender amps at this point. So there's no dirt channel (my 83 concert has a dirt channel. But I never use it, it doesn't bleed over anyways). But I've encountered a lot of channel switching amps that had that bleed over problem. It seems pretty common, I think most people just don't notice cause it's generally really really faint and as long as you're playing loudish it's not really an issue in most situations.

But yeah that's my suggestion. Put every knob that isn't used for the clean channel at zero and see if that fixes it.

What amp is it?

Re: My clean channel has a faint distorted tone in the back ground.

Sorry it took me so long guys. It is a bugera 333xl I know I know lol. But really it has been a good solid amp up until this issue. I put new tubes in it and had it rebiased about 2 weeks ago. I may just end up sending it back to sweetwater to be replaced. I like to keep the gain backed down some then use a boost to tighten it up. But for some reason they all make the amp brighter now. That just started the same day as the faint distorted tone.
I have tried 4 pedals a soul food, green rhino, Tc spark boost and ts808. I have used them with the amp before and they worked fine. But for some reason now they all make the amp sound like I turned the bass and mid knobs down from around 2 o'clock to noon or a little lower. It's a drastic change even with the tone knobs set to 0 it's still brighter and harsh.

Is it particularly humid where you are? I know it's felt like a swamp here in Jersey lately.

The reason I ask is that maybe the relay for channel switching got a bit swampy and the dirty channel isn't making a clear disconnect. Try switching the channel repeatedly (with the amp on) for about 30 seconds and see if that helps.

Also... A few other things to test:

  • Try turning the gain on the dirty channel down all the way and see if you still hear it in the clean
  • Try turning the reverb down or completely bypassing it and see if that helps
  • Try swapping the 12AX7s around (they're cathode biased, so you won't have to worry about getting your amp rebiased)
  • Turn the lights off and make sure that none of your power tubes are glowing red (blue and yellow glows are normal, but red on the plates is bad)

you get what you pay for. Yeah somebody had to say it... Seriously though, the bugera amps have always had some issues, check the connectors inside the amp (with it unplugged) a lot of the connectors inside the bugera are really crappy. Check on youtube for some video's on it. there are a ton of them.

Yet I've been beating my Bugera 1960 Infinium to death by maxing out the volume and running it into a resistive load for years now and it's fine.

All electronics have issues. People with problems are just loud and tend to only post when there are problems and like to necropost threads that died three years ago.

Yeah = my vote is for channel leakage.
