My current refinishing process...

Re: My current refinishing process...

I may just have to do a second run of painting then. This first job was simply a test run to see if I could do it and I can. Of course having several different coats of colors could add visual interest if I ever wanted to do a relic but I never understood that concept. If you want a relic guitar buy a new one and play it a lot for 30 years, duh!!! I may have to build myself a 2.5'-3' painting table to do this on. With all these runs it looks like my poor guitar is melting. I must've got too close in some spots and it pooled and ran. But it's a good start. I figure with a yellow paint finish I can save myself $500 instead of buying a Warmoth body already painted and bored. And it's something I have the satisfaction of doing.

You want this one:

BFM0363

Dupli-Color BFM0363 Chrome Yellow Ford Exact-Match Automotive Paint - 8 oz. Aerosol

http://www.amazon.com/Dupli-Color-BFM0363-Chrome-Exact-Match-Automotive/dp/B00407YP46

Wow. Amazon has that one with Prime Shipping for $8.03. Not sure if they charge shipping if you don't have Prime, but that could be the way to go if you can't special order it in locally.

dominus, are all your guitars you've refinished one 'bucker beasts? They're my preferred medium for my guitar work. Simple and straightforward.

What?!!

No clear coat??!

Huh?

dominus (in the first post) said:
After you get the color on (wait a day between sides), clearcoat it with a lacquer, again, one day per side. I use Plastikote, but Duplicolor is fine. Rustoleum isn't that great. I've heard good things about Deft, but haven't tried it. Let it sit for a few days.

Depends on my mood at the time. The first batch I did were Dean Vendettas, where I filled in the neck humbucker cavity and refinished, I think I did 17 of those. The next batch was a no-brand guitar from "Rocker", those were single humbucker hard tail bridge guitars. (4 of those.) Then I switched to Strats, and the first 30 or so I did were single humbucker. Then I switched to dual humbucker for a little while. I'm back to single humbuckers now. Not refinishing anything as I don't have a place for it (might build a shed to do so), so depending on the guitar, it either gets a single humbucker pickguard, or I put a dummy humbucker (one with the magnet removed) in the neck cavity. :)

Re: My current refinishing process...

Sorry. My bad.

When I read this post...

Was the Fusion old formula or new? If it's an egg shaped cap, don't do it. If it's an old fashioned spray paint cap, it should be ok. Test it first on a scrap piece of wood.

I don't sand these days, they seem to shine up enough for me. It's not a super high gloss, but I'm not picky enough to spend all that time buffing and polishing. I just throw it together and play.

I got the impression that you just color coated and put it together. I couldn't imagine clear coating without sanding first. I just misunderstood.

But I do admire your work. You've done some gorgeous jobs with super colors. I love their brilliance, and some have been the inspiration for my last two builds using fluorescent colors (orange and green). They glow when under a black light. Super cool.

Re: My current refinishing process...

I just bought the items I'll need to get rid of the old paint on Phoenix and put new on. Cheap shop towels, latex dishwashing gloves and brake cleaner... I know what I'm doing Saturday!!! And thank you for the product no. on the chrome yellow. That's exactly the color I want. I believe Fender and Warmoth call it graffiti yellow.

Re: My current refinishing process...

How'd you go about filling the extraneous routes on that one?

There weren't any. That was an eBay special, single humbucker, single volume guitar. It was ridiculously cheap, but the frets weren't sharp and the body was solid wood, so it was perfect for my needs.

Honestly wish I would have kept them, as I'm back to wanting that kind of setup. :D

Re: My current refinishing process...

Again - :notworthy I must bow to the master.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Re: My current refinishing process...

*GRUMBLE* I just called Advance Auto Parts and they told me I had to give them the parts number for the chrome yellow. I thought you could look up stuff on that nifty computer there Skippy. So either the computer has a limited interface or they're not stocking rocket scientists there either. /end *GRUMBLE*

Edited to add: I did a search for the color on Gooble and found a place selling it for $6.10 a can with $6.99 shipping J&B Tool Sales
