My dad could be making a nice score...

So the bass player at my church is selling a Fender MIM Fretless Jazz Bass (arctic white, rosewood board), a behringer 15 watt practise amp, a hard shell case, and strap for $600. Yesterday my dad borrowed the bass from the guy to try it out and see if he wants it enough to buy it and learn how to play. It's a pretty cool bass, tried it out and it is definitely a rock solid instrument. It has markers for where the frets would be, so that makes it easier. My dad doesn't know much about playing music, the only instrument he's ever touched is a harmonica. He looked like he was having a blast with it, even though he had no idea what he was doing, lol. And if he buys it, that saves me the effort of having to buy myself a bass, lol. I'll let you all know if he buys it or not.

Concidering the bass is a MIM, I would ask him if he would be willing to just sell the bass for around 375-400, then get a bigger and better amp with the rest of the money.

Either way, it sounds like your dad would have a lot of fun with it. My dad plays bass, and it makes for awesome jams.

I think he might should hold out for one used with the frets on it...It'll make everything so much easier at first.

I did tell him he'd probably be better off with a fretted one, but he seems pretty psyched with the fretless one. And if he likes it, who am I to stop him?

The only way a fretted bass is easier to learn on is if you're a guitar player. Since your Dad isn't, it should be the same amount of effort for him to learn on a fretless. Besides, once he gets good with it, he'll be able to play a fretted bass in his sleep.
