My Ever Growing Tweaked Out Wah Collection

Re: My Ever Growing Tweaked Out Wah Collection

Dear Wah Whore,

Do you ever plan on trying out the Fulltone Clyde? It only seems like the right thing to do if your going to use that moniker!

LOL!

LOL!

I have tryed the fulltone Clyde out and several Teese wahs...I Like my wahs better, plus the Vox wah looks alot cooler with the chrome/black color mix..Very 60's looking....

Read lew's comparisons between his Fulltone wah and the 847 I Modded for him..Lew claims to like the 847 better..So there you have it...

John

From my buddy Lew,who's ears I very much respect, and of course Lew himself!

"One more thing: I think my Vox Wah Wah that John (Stratdeluxer97) rebuilt for me has the strongest but still most vintage wah wah tone of any wah I've ever owned. If you want to own a wah that will do it all (everything from Jimi Hendrix to Puke tones ) get John to mod you a Vox 847 Wah Wah. (I hope that's the model number...it's the reissue with the chrome top)

I still love my Fulltone Clyde, but the modded Vox Wah Wah has a stronger wah wah effect and does those gutteral, growley, puking tones better than the Fulltone.

The wah wah effect comes on more suddenly with the modded Vox too, and I think that's makes it easier to get those kinds of gutteral tones".

Lew

This from my other buddy SWEET LOU
"STRATDELUXER97 John what a great job on that VOX WAH. It is so cool I wish I was better at describing it. I am thrilled. The thing works so well, everything the bypass, the way the thing has great sound through out the sweep. The volume control makes a diferance too, it lets you fine tune it.
John did the thing very quickly as well I got it sooner than I expected.
I am vey pleased thanks"

Cool! Do I remember reading somewhere that you put the Fulltone inductor in those Vox's? Good stuff man... nice to see the "vintage" wah tones coming back to where they belong.

I Like the Teese inductors the most, but since they are very hard to come by,I just use those in my own wahs...The Fulltone inductors are great also and I also use and like the Red fasel inductors...

John, they make a red and a yellow, and idea what the difference is, as they last time I looked they really didn't say anything was different between them.

I've tryed both the yellow and the red fasels and the fulltone "is" the one to get..The red fasel gives the wah a little more lows and is smoother....The yellow I don't care for..It is cleaner sounding and seems to not be as smooth and warm or have the lows like the red has...

I went back and forth on Sweet Lou's wah and I liked the red fasel better than the Fulltone in his wah? I guess it's overall component variation, but the red fasel is a good inductor also....The yellow? Jury is still out, though I'll eventually voice a wah to work with the yellow,I Just haven't gotten around to it yet..

So my question now becomes which one is supposed to be the original reissue?

The best sounding and closest inductor to the original in my opinion is the Fulltone inductor....The Teese inductor you see in my photos is my favorite inductor, but you can't buy that inductor outright...

If you're going Fasel, get the red one..

John, can you mod a Vox 847 wah with your mods and to be switchless too? ;)

Craig

Not switchless...What's wrong with true bypass via a DPDT switch?

Re: My Ever Growing Tweaked Out Wah Collection

What is the purpose of the cap on the perf board? Back when I had my Vox, I had Keeley install a DC jack, and I don't recall having something like that in my wah.

BTW, I was listening to some Jane's Addiction today and I realized I HAVE to have a wah (again  ).

Hello buddy...The cap is just a filter or "buffering" for a noise free power supply....it's a simple board copy from the first Dunlop CryBaby wahs(one that I owned)that I Incorporated into my own wahs..The cap is a 100mfd electrolytic...

LOL!

I lent John my Fulltone Clyde Deluxe for a couple of weeks and asked him to make my Vox 847 sound as good or better than my Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. And he did...it's at least as good. He installed a volume boost pot on the side like my Clyde Deluxe. Just replaces a resistor on the board with a variable resistor instead, which is what a potentiometer or pot is: a variable resistor.

The Wah effect is much more pronounced on the modded Vox and he altered a differant resistor on the boards value so that the Wah effect comes on more quickly and more pronounced than usual as I sweep through it.

Sounds great with a Strat or Tele but it's sometimes a little hot with a humbucker.

So now John is modding another Vox 847 for me and this time he's putting the volume boost on the side again, but on the other side he's installing a pot that will replace the resistor I mentioned that controls the sweep. So I'll be able to dial in how fast and how pronounced the Wah effect is and tweak it for whatever guitar I'm playing and whatever wah effect I prefer..or whatever mood I'm in.

Should be even greater than the last one!

I currently own 4 wahs and each sounds different...Similar though because there's a certain something I Like to hear with my wahs...Do I need 4 wahs? Nope, but I think it's a cool effect and I grew up with listening to this effect...It's a very vocal, talkative effect that turns heads...The better the wah is,the better it cuts through the mix and the better it works and sounds with overdrive and distortion..Give a wah to a player that really knows how to manipulate it,and Wow!
