My Fender James Burton Tele got a makeover

with advice from Lew and some other guys in the Ultimate Tele tone thread I changed the pups in my James Burton a couple months ago. I had the tone I was looking for but the stock Candy Apple Red finish wasn't my style, so, with some time off around the holidays I refinished it with the Vintage Cream aerosol nitro lacquer from the Guitar Re-Ranch. I'm real happy with the results and got a more vintage looking finish that I can live with. Now I got the tone and look that I want and didn't break the bank to get it.

Looks nice! I like Candy Apple Red though and my JD is staying that way. In fact, I just bought a mid 80's MIJ Tele Custom in the same CAR finish! I like the vintage Tele blond finish best though. Lew

That looks sharp badco. That "Bailey's Irish Creme" color is one of my favorites.

That came out nice. Did you take off the red or paint over it?

I followed the directions on the Reranch website. Since Poly is so hard to strip they just advised to sand down the original finish with 200 grit then use it as a base coat. I sanded the original finish down pretty well then applied a white lacquer based primer. Then sprayed the color coat (1 can) over that then the clear coat (1 can).

I waited about 2 weeks (and it killed me) so I wouldn't get any sand throughs then wet sanded and polished it.

I put a parchment pickguard on to add to the more vintage look and I had already put brass saddles on it.

That's pretty cool for two cans of spray paint. Your patience paid off.
