My final amp idea!

Alright, I have come to wonder if I should stick with the Hot Rod Deluxe, and replace the stock speaker(Special Design Eminence® 8 ohm, 50 watt Speaker) with something else that would sound great when being used as a 112 without any extension...Something SUPER Fendery and smooth and high wattage for high headroom...What replacement speaker is going to give me simply the best tone from this amp?

THEN, get a 112 extension cab from Avatar with another speaker that, when used as an extension cab for the HRD, would thicken and enhance the tone...I am REALLY thinking the Eminence Wizard is what I want, but will using a different brand speaker in the combo(I am assuming that an Eminence in the HRD itself wont be the best Fender sound) lead to disaster?

Yay or nay? If yay, I need speaker advice too for a high headroom sweet smooth jazz and blues tone!

I'm not up on all the speakers available now, and they're often a matter of taste

I'd recommend checking The Fender Forum, where you'll find a ton of info from HRD owners

Perhaps there is another similar model to the speaker you already have but with higher wattage that you could replace it with.

Then maybe get the 112 extension with the Wizard and it would probably sound great. Only problem with 112's is that they aren't much of a bargain, as a 212 isn't much more...Food for thought.

For high headroom, get the most eficient ceramic you can find.

The higher the Signal to Noise rating, the more efficient the speaker is.

IMO, a speaker that fits that description would be the Celestion Vintage 30. Great for adding clean headroom and increased volume to a one 12 amp like the Fender Deluxe Reverb. The G12H30 has a deeper, fuller tone IMO and it's actually my favorite ceramic 12...although the V30 has more power handling and might be a little bit more efficient. Lew

Also the Eminence Legend and Red Coat series aren't bad at all.
I will say the Mesa 90watt Black Shadows are a bit underrated (though quality control at Celestion is getting weird)

Also if you want chime, have you considered the Alnico Blues or Blue Dogs?

Boy...those reissue G12 Alnico Blues from Celestion sound great in a warm cathode biased amp like an AC-30 or Matchless C-30. I find them a little to bright in a "normal" amp with grid bias though. I have a Matchless 2 x 12 cab with a pair of Celestion G12 Alnico Blues. My cathode biased Matchless amps sound nice through them, especially the C-30...but my small box 50 watt Marshall head is ice pick city through them. The Weber P12B Blue Dog is a nice speaker too...and not so bright and ice picky. Lew

Everybody is suggesting British voiced speakers. The celestions, alnico blues, and blue dogs are great speakers, but if you just want that pure fender unadulterated tone, you need a JBL voiced speaker. I'd try a Weber aluminum dome California-it's a copy of the D120F-the premium speaker that was offered in the 60's for Fenders, the standard speakers were oxfords, utahs, and jensens. But dont get me wrong, an amp like that would sound great with a vintage 30, yet if you're out for THE glassy and smooth fender cleans go for the JBL style.

:laugh2: Never been a JBL fan...to clean and steely and squeeky for my tastes. They make me sound like Jerry Garcia....and I don't want to to sound like Jerry Garcia. :laugh2: I've been using Celestions so long that's pretty much the only 12" speaker for me. But I sure don't hear them as being limited to a British tone...I play Blues and Jazz as well as Rock and they do all of that just great. People think Celestions inherantly sound distorted or crunchy or like a Marshall and they don't have to sound that way at all...unless you want them to. I use Celestions in almost all of my amps...and they're the only 12's I ever use. Have them in my tweed Fenders, blackface Fenders and also in my Matchless amps. They're always great...and they only get that British tone when I dial that tone in and am going for that tone. Otherwise they sound like whatever style I want them to sound like...but they won't sound like a JBL. :laugh2: I did like Duane Allman's tone with JBL's and a 50 watt Marshall though. Lew

Lol yeah Lew, got a friend who has an old Proreverb BF with V30's in it, sounds fab...not as lowmiddy as they tends to get, got a nicer fuller range with those speakers.
I have never liked the stock BF Fender sound much, I dig the Tweeds instead:D

Fuzzy, you might get some good insight if you either call Weber (webervst.com) or post something on their speaker bulletin board. I did that for two amps and they did not steer me wrong.

They probably have a 'go to' speaker for your amp and needs.

I like Vintage 30's, just because of the tone and growl.

Spending the money on a good clean/boost OD is another thing to look into, if you're a lead player. I just checked out the new 10th Anniversary Fulltone FDII today, with the added mosfet switch for a Dumble-like tone. The brand new ones are metallic reddish copper colored. Pretty badass!
