My first project. RR style guitar.

Hello guys, so i wanna share a bit of this project that has been going on for a few months.

Let me start saying that at first I just wanted to refinish my Ibanez in color white... but i thought that I would need another guitar in the mean time... so after changing the aim of the project a lot of times i ended up with this.
Its made from Warmoth parts mostly, let me tell you the specs:

Neck
  • Goncalo Alvez neck
  • Ebony finguerboard
  • 22 frets
  • Their biggest stainles steel fret wire
  • Fender LRS roller nut
  • No inlays!

Body
  • Mahogany
  • HH configuration
  • Recessed wilkinson VS100 tremolo cavity
  • unfinished body

The neck i got from their stock, and the body was custom made. The neck has a strat headstock.... so maybe it will look weird...

The biggest 'feature' of this guitar would be the finish I think.
I saw some guitars that were made with a comic book and newspaper finish. I decided to do something similar and Im going with Evangelion manga.
People have mixed opinions about that. Some hate it with all of their heart, telling me im ruining the guitar. And others tell me its cool, but they would have chosen another manga/comic.
I say: Its my money :)

I wanted white, or zebra black and white pickups at first, from Seymour Duncan. But then I remembered about Sublime pickups and how he can get any look you want in the pickup! I went with these.

I had a problem when i started putting the coats of clear and so on the body because the surface was not even. As glued little patches of paper to cover the body, there where a lots of bumps. My dad figured it would take a lot more coating and sanding to get an even finished surface. So right now im taking of the paper that is on the body and will make a single huge sheet of paper to cover it all at once.

Right now I only need the pickups(should be ready anyday now), and finish the finish and should be ready to assemble!

Now some photos...:

I have made a video, talking a bit about it. Its in spanish... but here is it if you are interested:

So!... Im very exited about this guitar, and i hope it sound awesome because I could have buy a nice high end guitar for the same money D:

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Hey rad man, That reminds me of the one i did in berserk graphics. You should have used fabric it would have made for a more professional finish plus you could of asked me for help hehe.

Its not too late, i would suggest not using paper.

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Wow!
That looks awesome.
How do you do that with fabric?
I am totally in for that if I can adjust and chose what appears around the pickup cavities.

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Yami, I think you picked a cool look. To heck with the naysayers. It is YOUR guitar, not there's! I think they will change there minds when it is finished. If it doesn't come out quite right, redo it till you are happy with it. Then ROCK ON Garth!
Ya Raph.....That is just SICK....in a VERY GOOD WAY!

Yamifrankc is under my wing now. His project will be the envy of all the non believers

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Thanks J E C, with kramersteen help it will look very good.
And that guitar will look cool to, little pigbacon. Is it a Dean ML, or a Chapman ml?

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

you could take a saw and sandpaper and take the strat headstock to something like this

also about pickups, did you ordered them?, if not you could take any pickup and coat the corresponding shot of the manga over it (this thing is airbrushed, but i guess a proper job with fabric will get ir right, anyway you got the idea of what i mean)

a cool idea for the neck will be do something similar to what kramersteen did with the fretboard of his fullmap guitar, but let the back of the neck finished with oil

Dean. The geometry of the guitar and the angularity of the comic graphics should go well together.

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Hey EDX, i have thought about doing that to the headstock. But im worried i would mess it up, i have some experience working with aluminum and steel, but no wood at all.
Yeah, i ordered from Sublime(http://www.sublimepickups.com/en/), he can make it look like anything. He as very cool examples and the pricing is very reasonable.
I do not know for the neck myself, I always wanted to play on a ebony fingerboard and this will be my first time, so i will leave it natural.

At first i thought that I would have a lot of area to work with in the RR, but it turned out the opossite and most of the front has cavities or is very narrow

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

mess up a good headstock isn't easy, if you're afraid of doing the sawtooth you coul left it as an arpoon (like the original Randy's V), leavy ebony natural is good too, also consider an oil finish for the back of the neck, i've done that to the neck of my V and it's soooo damnn smooooth, (the best oil you could use is natural vegetal oil, and then apply tru oil, anyway, this is what experts recomend, 'cause when i did the oil finish to my neck i used 3 in 1 oil, did a ton crap of coats an then rubbed with a cloth......)

other thing, black hardware with speed dimebag knobs will be totally killer for that ax
speed dimebag knobs

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Ill look into that arpoon headstock.

Warmoth's site says goncalo alvez is a wood mean to be unfinished, and other people around the internet too. It feel rigth like that, altough I have no given it actual play time.

Black hardware I got.
I did not know about these knobs, I have black metal ones right now.
I will be using concentric pots for volume, I don't thint these are available in that way...

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

oh cool either, if you decide to use pickup rings i recomend you put duncan triple shots and a push/pull pot for tone as a kill switch or as a blower switch (it by-passes the full guitar electronics and sends one of the pickups directly to the jack)

I did that with some blackouts :nana: the rusty thing as these guys call. I glued ultra thin bits of wood to the blackouts then i finished over that with my regular process.

I have a few guitars with the bypass switch. Its the equivalent to adding 100 horsepower to your car.

Figured I would share some more pictures in the meantime:

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

This is gonna look very cool. Go slow and make sure there are no surface bumps, you may require some extra sweat with that sanding. And nothing wrong with your English.. :) . Have fun.

And yes nice choice on the Trem.

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

Small update...
Im planing to use this as a decal on the headstock, the text on the lower half is not final.
Funny enough, no one of the people i showed it to noticed the hint to the mexican flag. Im not sure yet if i will leave it there or just a black line.

Thanks Jocelyn, written is not too bad, but when i speak it... people just look at the with the most weird face :P

Re: My first project. RR style guitar.

damn, sorry for the necro posting, but i want to know if this guitar was even finished
