My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

My first attempt at a hybrid.

The surgery was a complete success. A bit delicate and provoking some anxiety, but nevertheless it was quick and painless and the patient(s) survived and recovered quite favorably.

I took the screw coil from my '59n and the slug coil from my Custom and put them together and mounted it in the bridge of my Wilshire Pro with the '59 screws next to the bridge.

Let me say that previously I had the '59 with an A8 magnet in that position and thought that it sounded pretty good. Still not quite enough mids for my taste and maybe a tiny bit shrill as well. I had my Custom8 in the bridge of an SG that I haven't played in a long time so I took it out of the SG to use as a donor/replacement for my Wilshire's bridge pup.

Woe!! Very heavy, strong mids (too strong) and lacking a little on the high end (my Wilshire is a very warm sounding guitar). At first I thought it was an OK sound, but very quickly decided that it had too much mids and not enough highs. I was going to put an A5 mag back into the Custom thinking that it may just be what this guitar needs. But I decided that the Custom wind had just too much output as well, and with all the talk about the new production model Custom/'59 hybrid, and reading so much about how to do the BachToRock hybrid, it seemed fairly easy, so I bit the bullet.

OHHHH........MY.......GOSH!!!

There couldn't be a more perfect pup for this guitar. Bright chimey highs that are alive and smooth (not brittle like the ceramic Custom and not overbearing like the '59), full rich mids that are obvious, while at the same time being warm and gentle like a welcomed summer breeze. The bass is strong and tight, not flubby nor muddy, not too much nor too little.

The overall tone is rich and lush. I can only describe it as being "complete", not lacking in anything.

I put the leftovers together to make another '59/C5 hybrid (C5 screw coil + '59 slug coil) that I think I'll use for my new Vendetta make-over.

I can't say enough about this pup. If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing something good.

Glad to hear it Doc! Really great when a plan goes together.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

Way to break your hybrid hymen! My next will be a PGb/Demon. The "heaven and hell" hybrid. I can almost see using the PG Slug/demon screw coil with the A2 in the bridge with the Demon hex/PG Screw coil & A5 in the neck.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

how do you know what pickups will make a good combination?

Love the name.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

worst part of makin a hybrid for me is the fragile wires you have to handle.
The wires comin out of the coils are very fragile one tug too hard and its game over!:cool2: the rest of the operation is a snap:)

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

Try a JB/59 hybrid. More crunch than a JB+, with nice highs and mids, especially in a fairly heavy mahogany body with a maple top.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

All right, that's grate. I just picked up a used 59 trembucker with a can on it and a new Custom Custom trembucker to do the same thing. I was planning to put each one in my strat for a little wile before doing the hybrid to get an idea what they sound like stock and with different mags since I have no experience with ether one of them. So if you make one hybrid out of those and then use a third PU to make two more different hybrids, for a total three different hybrids what would be a good choice ? A Screamin Demon maybe ?

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

Hey Doc, what magnet did you end up using for your little experiment?

would that be a 59 neck, or bridge model?
and if you combine these 2, could you use the left-over coils for the neck position?

My first attempt at a hybrid. ....OHHHH........MY.......GOSH!!! .....I can't say enough about this pup. If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing something good.

Now you need to make a 59/Jazz neck pickup to go with it. in my opinion, possibly an even better pickup and a perfect match for the Custom/59.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

the 59/jazz, both the bridge-versions, is imho one of the best neckpickups around. great pickup.

some nice hybrids:

jb/fullshred
jb/custom
patb2/bluesbucker

I can imagine the PG/screamin demon hybrid be great, but I'm afraid it will only be a good neckpickup. I thought the s.d. has less mids than the custom, so it might turn out a bit weak-ish...

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

The Demon/PGb might be pretty cool. I really love my Demon/490R hybrid neck pickup, I'm thinking about making another one, but I'll have to drill out the Demon coil to put in slugs.

Sounds like a great idea. I love each of those two pups by themselves, might love them even more together.

Great name, by the way..."H&H hybrid"

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

Doc baby, you beat me to it.

Well, you got me started with mag swapping. Now I gotta give you the push to try a hybrid. This C5/59 sounds amazing. I used a '59n in mine.

I may be on my way for many more hybrids in the future. It's fun, easy, and very rewarding. Even moreso than just mag swapping.

Ya gotta do it sooner or later. Might as well be sooner.

Re: My first surgery of this type...59/C5 hybrid...

Hey Doc, what magnet did you end up using for your little experiment?

I used a polished A5. I was at first thinking about using an A8 (since I liked the C8 and the '59n(A8) so much), or even a UOA5, but I figured that the Custom is so meaty in the mids that I wouldn't need to add anymore with a magnet, even though the '59n is quite scooped. I think I guessed right...the A5 really makes a great EQ with this hybrid. At this point in time I don't even want to think about a different mag in it. Maybe someday, because I just can't seem to leave anything alone for very long, but right now this thing is sooo awesome.

I'm probably one of the few people here who don't care for the C/59, but that's pobably because I don't care for either of the donor pickups.

The PG and Demon are my recent 2 favorite Duncans. The only thing with PGs is they are few and far between at prices cheap enough to expermient with. I'm always looking for beaters

The C5/59 hybrid actually is quite different from either the '59 or the C5. Each of them "fills in the gaps" of the other to produce a very different sounding pup (hybrid). I didn't much like the stock '59, but with an A8 it was much better. I didn't like the C5 either, but here again, with an A8 it was pretty darn good. Put one coil of each together and with an A5 and you have a real winning combination.
