My first Telecaster was free!

I'm thrilled to have received a free 2001 Mexican Fender Telecaster! It requires a lot of work, but I'm eager to get it in shape. If I'm planning to upgrade the pickups, what would you suggest? I aim to maintain its vintage Telecaster sound, although I also appreciate Prince's distinctive Tele tones, which I understand are different.

For vintage, I'd go Broadcaster set.

For Prince, you need either

Bill Lawrence USA vintage S1/S3 pickups

or Heartbreaker Madcat pickups with these specs:

It's hard to describe, but it seems that playing the guitar acoustic it plays fairly well and sounds really good but plugged in it doesn't have the mojo or life to it. Not sure if it's because it has a bowed neck and badly needs a new set of strings and a set up but we will see... thanks!
