My Frankenstrat

Hi,

I've been a mostly acoustic player my whole life, although have always had a couple of electrics, a Dan, which I still own, and a stupid rare Tele (serial # 5862) I sold to buy my Collings CJ. I've never felt comfortable on electric, mostly because of tone, but I've also never put in the time to learn the instrument. Last year a friend who has way too many guitars, including a lot of junk, gave me what might be the cheapest Strat Fender makes ("Squire?"), but I started playing it a lot and for the first time started liking my tone. My main amp is a tweed 4x10 Bassman from the first year they reissued it, maybe late 80's?, and I have a ****ty solid state Deluxe, plus I sometimes play it though a Pandora. I just really liked the sound of the guitar. (I almost exclusively set the switch on the second notch from the top (meaning toward the strings), with the tone on full and the volume at about half, but would really like more tone options.) I hated the neck, however, and bought a maple/rosewood Warmouth 10/16. I also took the springs out and packed the hole with Bondo. And it went from sounding good to amazing! I'm now thinking about upgrading the pickups, and from what I've read SD is the way to go for someone who wants a warm, clear tone (the only effect I use is a dash of reverb). Assuming someone has been kind of enough to read this novel! can anyone recommend a pickup setup for me? Also, would upgraded pots and switch make a difference?

I play mostly blues, reggae and jazz.

Thanks,
~ Blacky

welcome to the forum!

those squiers sometimes have pretty high output ceramic magnet pups. have you seen what they look like?

Re: My Frankenstrat

I have strat antiquities and they are superb. I've heard the SSL 1's are Allstate just as good for pure strat tones.
