My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

many. Hiwatt 50 watt DR504, matchless lightning, 50 watt plexi lead specs, princeton reverb, front of my UAD sound card with several of their amp models.

But no really what I want is the 36th with more mellow attack. I am starting to think this may not be possible since what thing I love about the 36th is how great they sound with volume and tone changes which requires a healthy dose of impedance load which equals compression.

Speakers ?

all sorts of speakers. Alnico for fender cleans, greenbacks for marshall to fane clones for the hiwatt.

If you are already using an amp setup that has a lot of treble and mids and then you add the Seths, they will sound honky and bright. If you haven't yet, re-EQ your amp settings for them. Make sure you have tried them set 1.5mm away from the strings and screw the pole pieces down almost level with the covers.

Alright folk. I put them hard against the string. They sound better and more balanced. After more testing the pickups sound really nice and pack a punch. I don't find it poorly balanced after my ears get accustomed to them. My issue continues to be how poorly they react to the tone control.

Can I pay extra to swap them for antiquities in case I want to try those?

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

if you are within the return period you should be able to yes but i dont know if thats what you should do. id say the aph might be a better choice. the antiquitys have a soft attack but dont have a big bottom. there is a very "vintage" quality to the sound and i love them, i have a covered set in one guitar and an uncovered bridge with a pgn in another. the aph has a smooth soft attack but also has a bigger bottom (still a2 so you wont get a big tight a5 type bottom end) if you want a thicker sound with a little more output then the slash aph2 set is a notch hotter.

humbuckers put little pull on the strings, especially alnico2 loaded buckers. a8 and ceramic are significantly stronger magnets but even those dont pull on the strings all that much. you need to be much more cautious of rod magnet single coils, especially in the neck position, those are the ones that will do weird things when too close.

as to why seths react poorly to the tone control, i cant tell you. i have a seth set in one guitar and seth neck in another and dont notice anything off about how the tone works. both use a 500k control and .02 cap

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

Poor reaction to the tone is the cap, not the pickup

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

you guys are awesome with lots of great suggestions.

I just tried the seth again after a fresh good night sleep. I don't like them. No bass, sound thin and the roll down the tone controller is bad. I do still like the attack. I will pull them and put them sale as they are nearly brand new.

The thing is the 36th other than a bit too compress on the attack, sound awesome in every shape or form. If you roll down the volume or tone, it does what you would expect. 36th are going back in. Will keep an eye out for a set of Alnico pro II.

I too find the Seth set with covers to be a bit steely and thin.

But with the covers removed it’s much ballsier.

Louder, fatter, and more textured.

Better in so many ways.

Under the covers, I’ve found zebra coils, black coils and double cream coils.

Just like a 50’s Gibson PAF.

So clearly Duncan knows a lot of us remove the covers and uses different colored bobbins just so guys like me/us have a little surprise coming.

Truth be told, I love the sound of @n uncovered Seth but don’t love the covered Seth.

Big dif in tone.

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

thanks everyone. Sounds like the APII is the way to go. Can someone tell me where my sound would go with a set of pearly gates? They seem to be high mids heavy. More of the tele on steroids tone?

Re: My les paul has 36th, what seymour should I get?

Actually nevermind. Gonna keep the Seth lovers. Going to try them in another guitar. For some reason the 36th matches what I'm looking for so that went back in.
