My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

My new, at least new to me, Les Paul arrived today via Fedex. It is a 1989 Standard with what I was told was a Darkburst finish. I was told to expect a chunky 59 type neck. I also thoughr it would come with the thick binding. Much to my surprise it has a dark burst finish, but it is not brown like the pics showed it is actually a dark Cherry Sunburst with a thin binding that allows one to see the maple cap in the lower horn cutaway. The neck is not a club like 59 neck but is more like the necks on a couple of real 50s Bursts and a R0 (60s Historic RI) than the baseball bats that come on the R7s, R8s and R9s.

The pickups are early model Duncan Alnico Pro II in the neck and Pearly Gates in the bridge. Both humbuckers have the nickel covers. The guitar has great tone that I cannot get muddy at any setting, fantastic sustain and great presence or balls. Put that together with a fast neck for a Paul and you could shred, but why muck up that fantastic sustain.

Here are a few pics

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Looks great Brent - Congratulations!

And you won't even need to change the pickups. Strings are top-wrapped too!

I should be receiving my "new" '91 Classic on Monday. :)

It's great getting new guitars! :fest7:

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

wow.....that color just looks unique to me..........beautiful axe

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Looks like you've gotten yourself a really fine guitar there.... I'm liking that color very much!!! Have fun !!!

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

The thin binding is something that folks love about the reissues. It sounds like you have a "normal" neck. I'm not sure when the classic was released, but that guitar had more of a thin neck and some rather ugly green looking tuner buttons (ugly to me).

It's got a fantastic combo of pickups in it. That's a sweet looking guitar.

So, we're all dying to know how much.... ;)

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

I caught a quick glance of the title first and i thought it said "My Les Paul has STDs". I'm very happy to know it doesnt!

Nice looking axe!

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Sweet axe! I like the plaintop look, very classic! The p'up combo sounds like it would be a winner. Congrats :D

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Les Paul STD, huh? Ouch. What did the old guy give you, herpes? Did he at least call you afterwards? . . .

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

very nice.....i'm sure that color looks even better in person...nice pup selection as well....smooth neck and screamin bridge...that's what it's all about man!!!

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Very nice guitar indeed, congrats!

It appears that your particular guitar has a tune-o-matic bridge on top of ABR-1 bridge posts. I didn't think that was possible but thats what I seem to see from the pics. Also check the D string intonation as the saddle appears "off" in relation to the A and G saddles.

Other than that fussy little stuff it looks like you found a killer guitar.

Re: My Les Paul STD Arrived Today

Well it just had a setup and fret level/dress. In fact the action seems to low to me, but I guess I like higher action. I will leave it alone till new strings are needed.

Robert, I will check the intonation and what would I look for on the bridge that might be a problem and what can be done to correct it?

Brent

P.S. It went for over $1200 dollars, more than I wanted to spend. I was willing to spend a bit more because of its history and knowing the owner.
