My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

When I had my Mark V, I remember switching it to solid state rectifier on everything except the clean channel because it was too spongy. I guess that's what the problem with this Mini Rectifier is except it's different than that. Mesa Boogie says refers to it as an "elastic" feel. I suppose that's an ideal way to refer to it. The thing is that it doesn't have a natural response. It almost feels like playing a POD except the notes come out more stubbornly.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it doesn't have a rectifier tube? I wonder if it's trying to emulate the feel of a rectifier tube. It doesn't seem so bad in 25w mode, so I'm thinking that maybe 10w mode tries harder to emulate it?

In any case, it's not the kind of response that I am used to so I'm considering returning it. It just doesn't feel right. I have played single, dual and triple rects and they feel more natural. Playing this one feels as if there is some kind of weird gravity that keeps your pick from fluttering out notes with ease. It's great for rhythm work, but soloing isn't at fluid unless the gain is just past the max setting that Boogie recommends.

On a separate note, it seems like the Mini Rect is real picky about speakers. It doesn't sound good with Eminence Lightnings (icepicky), Texas Heat (TOO much sizzle), and the Black Shadow speaker is an improvement but not perfect. I don't think the Black Shadow sounds a whole lot like a V30. To me it sounds darker, more bass, less mids, and more compressed.

Anyway, I just noticed that. It will probably sound good with Celestion V30 or Heritage speakers.

So is it just me or does the Mini Rect feel weird to play?

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

Cant help ya on the amp, but what would make ya think the shadow sounds like a V30?

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

it is 25 watts only 12 pounds

I wonder if the EL84 tubes are throwing you off etc etc it is definitely a diff amp than single/dual recto...

I didn't say that. I said that I don't think it sounds a whole lot like one. When you do a searh on the internet for info on Black Shadow speakers, a lot of people say they're tweaked V30's. Perhaps they are, but I think they're not that similar.

wow I did not know mini rectos where overly compressed

I didn't say they were.

I don't think so because I've been using a Blues Junior since I started playing. I have played a few Mesa Boogies with EL84's (Lonestar Special, 5:25, TA-15) and they didn't have the same weird sag.

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

I have heard the comparison made before as well, and that is why I asked. I think those people must be tone deaf. Dont believe everything you read on the internet ;)

Black shadow sounds more like a tweaked 75w celestion. Doesnt have any of the midrange complexity of a V30.

That can deff be a part of the amp's weirdness !

I am not a fan of EL84s - but that is just me !

Well the Black Shadow is IDEAL for the Mini Rect. It's icepicky with the Eminence Lightning which contrasted with how beautiful, smooth and articulate it sounded with my Electra Dyne. It's a bit spiky with a V30. I haven't tried it yet with the Texas Heat because I figure it will have too much sizzle.

So after trying all those, the Black Shadow sounds really, really good with the Mini Rect. It makes me wonder if a Governor might be even better.

Surprisingly, even though it's based on EL84s, it's not as smooth as a regular rectifier. It also doesn't sound AS big since, at least to my ears, it sounds exactly like a regular rectifier but kind of squashed in a narrower band from bass to treble. It doesn't cascade from mids to low like a regular rectifier.

It's a really, really good amp, so I don't want to give the impression that it's not, but it's more aggressive than I thought it would sound. That being said, the tone controls are difficult to work with as all Mesa Amps and I have yet to sit down and write out all of the settings and volumes that might work for me.

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

I haven't tried the Mini Rec, mostly because I'm not a Mesa fan.

Since you've had the H&K Tubemeister 18 and Mini Rec, just tell me you like the H&K more.

I'm figuring that my next amp will be the Tubemeister 18 or 36. I've already got amps that do something different. But I love the 18. I'm waiting till I play a 36 to make a decision.

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

I used to want a recto when I listened to teh nu metalz...dual recto is where its at for that modern tone,

I would want all the low end and sponginess of the 2 channel original... solid state rectifier in the 50 watt? people love el34? lower wattage? hmm...

Sorry, I wish I could say that I like the Tubemeister more because I'm a huge Hughes and Kettner fan, but after finally getting the hang of dialing in the Mini Rect, it blows the Tubemeister away. AWESOME clean tones that the Tubemeister just can't get. I mean GREAT cleans. I thought my Texas Modded Blues Junior (Texas Heat and JJ tubes) had intensely good cleans, but the Mini Rect is a feat of engineering.

More power and bigger bass response. More juicy lead tone. More volume. Sweet, sweet dynamic response. Super crunchy rhythm sounds. Of course, awesome Mesa Lead tones.

The Tubemeister is a great value and offers a whole lot of features, but it's outclassed by the Mini Rect. Heck, the Mini Rect is THE best lunch box amp out there (well the TA-15 is as awesome but not as versatile). The Mini Rect also outclasses the EVH Mini as well.

Sorry if that's bad news for you, but I'm just being honest. I want to transform this rig into a little smoother type sound so I'm going to get a smoother speaker. I'll post a review soon.

For now, check out some of the tones guys are getting. I figured out how to get this same kind of woman tone in the first video except even better. It still sounds a bit grainy in that video. The second video does a great job, a bit past halfway, showing the kinds of Joe Bonamassa'ish sounds you can get with a Les Paul and other great clean sounds.

yeah Hair Metal :D

in response to the OP have you tried using different output valves?

I find that lowish wattage el84 high gain amps generally don't work too well as its a bit hard to keep it in check due to the preamp being starved of the voltages it needs.

Good luck in solving your issues. My first thing to check though would be to swap the valves around and see if it gets any better for you.

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

I don't think the Black Shadow sounds a whole lot like a V30. To me it sounds darker, more bass, less mids, and more compressed.

The MC-90s I have have more top and bottom end with a brighter midrange than the V30s I have.

The V30s are darker and smoother than the MC-90. Stronger in the middle mids rather than the upper mids. Not as articulate as the MC-90 but a lot punchier response.

I like the MC-90s with the Recto's vintage high gain since the upper mid speaker response supports the vintage mode's upper mid strength. I didn't like the MC-90 with the Recto's Modern mode since the speaker is weak in the low mids which is where the modern mode is at it's strongest... so the end result is an overall weak midrange.

Re: My Mesa Mini Rectifier Feels All Wrong

I like the spongyness with the mini, hate tight compressed amps when there cranked. this amp is very smooth at high volumes, more then most amps i owned. I always retube right away and dont care for the stock JJ preamp tubes. The JJ power tubes work great with this amp, my SG and les Paul sound really good!

No no no no no no no...

Black Shadow 90s are more similar to the Classic Lead 80 speakers, but a touch punchier to my ears.
