My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Curly

Moe's Bluesman
A while back, I showed my white tele (in the avatar) to my buddy Jack Creek, and he loved it. I helped him build his own, and he loved that one too. So much that he said, "we could sell these!", which put pressure on me to do the best job I could on my next one. :)

I think I succeeded -- this one certainly sounds as good as my other two customs, and maybe even a little better -- thanks in no small part to the great tapped tele set that MJ wound.

I'm also proud of the way the neck finish turned out, thanks to some help from my friend at work, Glen Farmer, who's a fine wood worker, and did a great job of buffing out the oil finish and polishing the frets.

We finished the neck today, I took all the parts to Fred, and he challenged his tech to help him "build a guitar in two hours", and they did!

My thanks again to Tommy at USACG for always exceeding my expectations with his parts, to Marty Bell for the beautiful blonde finish, to MJ for a great set of pickups, and to Fred Marotta for the fine assembly and set up.

I'm happy enough with this one to want to take Jack up on his idea to come up with my own decal. I nicknamed her "Meg" for now, 'cause she's a cute little blonde. ;)

I want to thank the forum bros for their constant inspiration and love of gear.

Enjoy!

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Ok, but can you build me a Les Paul?

Nice looking Tele Gary. You've sure done a lot of projects over the past few years. Hope whatever you want to do works out great for you.

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Dang, Curly, you have that mojo-licious thing going on with teles these days.

Meg is a beauty! :)

My name is Stevo and I like teles too :smokin:

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

I love that color! I would put a white/black/white pickguard on it though!

Otherwise, friggin sweet!

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Looks like a sweet one! But I say that about all your custom creations. Speaking of which...how many guitars have you put together so far, in total?
Have you sold any, or are they all on www.bluestheater.net ?

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

thanks, guys ... I don't think I really want to start selling guitars -- it would end up taking the fun out of it for me, and it's already competitive enough out there!

cool, you can be Meg's Godfather .. I was listening to "Skyroll" on the way back from picking her up.:)

I look forward to getting one of my tele in your hands just to see what you think!

the tally so far is:
  • 4 Warmoth strats
  • 2 USACG strats
  • 1 Warmoth tele
  • 4 USACG teles (and one on the way)
haven't sold any -- haven't tried, but I am running out of room!

all the ones I've built are up on my site

my goal right now is to consistently build guitars that are as good, or better, than other Custom Shop guitars

my disclaimer: I'm not a builder. I've spent a good deal of time, effort, and money figuring out how to spec these guitars right so that they come together right. That's a constant challenge, and it gives me a chance to apply my design background to my love of instruments.

thanks again for all your encouragement!

Hey Curly Dan,

Thanks for the help on my tele and strat, I've sold one of my Fender Masterbuilts and when I finish the strat I'll sell the other one, what killer guitars. Hope to see you soon.

you weren't supposed to see that ... some of those tele parts are back ordered, unless I want to order from three different places. :smack:

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Oh my! I didn't know black on cream would look that good. Smokin' guitar, Curly!

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

yup..white pg and it would be perfect (for me) Curly you are the only guy here who gives me Tele GAS....I always end up playing some Zep I when I see one of these threads:laugh2:

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

thank, guys

I chose the black guard because it's based on the early 50s teles cosmetics. I did add modern features - capped neck with top adjust, and the tapped pickups with 5-way switching.

I've built a couple that are lighter weight -- they all have their own personality, but this came together very nicely. It's nice and resonant acoustically, the tone is balanced, and it gets nice harmonics.

the neck is full, not clubby, and the action is low and fast

I'm pretty satisfied, but I hope to get a couple of independent reviews.

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Very sweet!! If you do end up building these things I would be glad to be your 1st customer. I have had a custom Tele in mind for quite some time now.

Re: My name is Curly, and I like teles, part IV.

Well, now, you don't have to go into business, per se, but you could kinda keep a sideline running to feed your habit. Nothing's more fun than someone paying you to do what you like doing.
