My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

I've had this posted on the Strat forum for a few days now with no response. Figured this would be a more suitable place :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I've just finished wiring up two P-Rails with a phase switch (neck volume push/pull) and a series/parallel switch (bridge volume push/pull).

However, when only the neck pickup is selected and the s/p switch is pulled I'm getting no sound from the neck pick up. Funny thing is when I select BOTH pickups I am getting sound from the neck pickup. Am I missing something here? Is this normal or have I messed something up? I've checked my wiring and all seems to be in order.

Here's my diagram. I followed it to the letter (I think), but I used star grounding so all ground wires are grounded at one common ground.

Aside from this, the guitar sounds fantastic. These pickups are great!!

You are using the Triple Shots on each P-Rail?

The diagram is accurate. Are you sure you've got it wired exactly like the dia? Double check everything. Make sure none of the wires are shorted to any other wire or contact lug. That's easy to do when wiring those push/pulls. Make sure there are no solder "strings" touching any contact that it shouldn't.

The only way this dia won't work is if there is a mistake in your wiring or soldering.

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

I'm draggin up an old post here but I still haven't got this sorted. Guitar has been sitting unplayed for years.

I've checked wiring and double checked and it's correct. Is it possible my pot is faulty? How would one test it with a multi meter?

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

Pickups series/parallel? Or coils series parallel?

If it's pickups series/parallel, both pickups have to be selected for it to work.

If it's coils series/parallel, one push/pull can't do both pickups.

I don't see a diagram. Seems like an image must be broken after 5 years.

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

One of the issues with the Jimmy Page wiring diagrams is that there tend to be a couple of 'dead' combos.....as in no sound if you have a certain selection. Stretching my meory back to one of these threads on the situation, it rings a bell that series parallel for both pickups together was one of these issues.....as in you may need to return it to parallel for the neck pickup to work again

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

After pulling my hair out and rewiring the series/parallel switching pot several different times all to no avail, I just decided to ditch it and just stuck with just the one push/pull pot as a phase switch. Guitars back together and working fine. I guess I'll never know what was wrong with it, or just maybe thats the way it was supposed to work, as AlexR was mentioned.

Anyhow, thanks for the input, maybe I'll look into it again in another 5 years.... Stay tuned.

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

If you end up revisiting this (and for others searching for help), please post pictures of your work and your diagram you are working from. Sometimes it is difficult to know what is wrong from just descriptions.

Re: My Neck PU isn't working.... Series/parallel switch

It does depend on the wiring. I have a strat where I have a push pull to put the middle pickup in series with whichever other pickup is selected. Either bridge or or neck must be selected (it makes no difference if you select 1, 2, 3, 4 the middle is in series) but for this wiring to work, when the middle is in series, it has to be in series with something otherwise it's out of circuit so middle on its own with push pull up = dead spot.
